Homebrew Anutanin Species Details

Physical Description

Anutanin are a bizarre race with the features of felines and dragons mashed together. They possess scaly hands with prehensile fingers and feet tipped with large claws, a prehensile dragon-like tail, spines or frills along their backs, with large wings protruding from the shoulder blades, and dragon like features around their feline faces. Their fur varies greatly in color, as do their scales, depending on their dragon parent. Some anutanin have a lion's mane or an eastern dragon's whiskers. Anutanin mostly have fur but their skin underneath is scaly. It is to a lesser degree of protection than actual dragons. Some anutanin also have horns that vary among dragon typing. Anutanin are seen walking like dragons on all fours but are also able to stand on their hind legs when needed.

History

Simple genealogists like to just classify anutanin as the offspring between dragonborn and tabaxi. However, anutanin are born in general from the union of any draconic and feline race. They historically are vied for by both clans, but more so the feline side usually because the dragon side has more value placed on purity of blood and power. The anutanin, while possessing arguably the better of both worlds, lags behind in the true strengths of the dragons, at least, from the dragons accounts. Their breath and scales are not nearly so powerful or durable. However, they inherited wit and flexibility from their feline lineage, which aids them well and makes them a very balanced race. Nonetheless, anutanin are rare due to the union of these races being rare in and of themselves. Many will pass lifetimes only hearing whispers of legendary cat dragons with might breath and brain.

There are a few tales known about the anutanin and their feats despite being such a far flung race. There is the tale of the amazing one man army, Ferfol, who vanquished a horde of orcs and saved a dragonborn settlement from obliteration. There is another tale of Gighenholl, who brought about peace between two warring neighboring kingdoms with her masterful wit and entertainment. Or Titanthos, who caught a great monster of the deep and revealed it to the world. Yes, the anutanin are a small, but mighty race indeed. One would wonder how they could not be with such mighty lineages.

Society

Anutanin have no known society, as they are very much a phantom race. One hears of their deeds, but never sees. They have small numbers after all. However, it is rumored there is a secret citadel of anutanin making somewhere in the mountains of the east. It was a former nest of dragons, used as a hatching ground. However, the dragons dwindled there and left. Supposedly, they left a small litter of anutanin there, though no one is sure how they were born there. People speculate wandering tabaxi came by and bred with some of them. Their small number grew enough so they populated the mountainsides with their caves and established a city. None have seen it, but anutanin are known to be drawn by such a tale of their kindred and so usually make the pilgrimage to ascertain the legends for themselves.
