Homebrew Awakened Skeleton Species Details
Feared by many, animated skeletons are typically mindless automatons used to carry out whatever mundane task their necromancer master has set out for them. Sometimes these skeletons are not mindless, however. Whether it be by accident or design, a rare few rise from death into undeath with all of their mental faculties intact. This unbirth is followed by the question: what to do now. The necrotic energies that raised this creature will keep it going effectively forever, so what plans do you have for eternity?
Awakened Skeleton Traits
As the skeletal remains of a humanoid, you have certain traits in common with all other humanoid racesAbility Score increase
Your constitution score increases by 2 and your dexterity increases by 1
Age
Skeletons can exist indefinitely as long as the magical phenomenon that raised them is sustained, and as long as their bones resist the wear and tear of their activities. Given time the necrotic energies that sustain you will heal most wounds you take at approximately the same rate as a mortal, and your hit dice function as normal.
Size
Humanoid skeletons are roughly the size they were in life ranging from 5 to 6 feet tall. Your size is medium.
Alignment
Skeletons are usually Lawful Evil if raised by negative energy, but depending on the means by which they were resurrected they can be any alignment.
Darkvision
The magic that raised you allows you to peer through the gloom, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You cant discern colors in darkness, only shades of grey.
Undead Nature
You count as undead for all spells and abilities that affect undead.
You are immune to poison damage and cannot have the poison condition.
You are immune to disease.
You don't need to eat, drink, or breath.
You do not need to sleep, you don't suffer exhaustion due to lack of rest, and magic cannot put you to sleep.
Night of the Sleeping Dead
When you take a long rest, you must spend at least 6 hours as an inactive pile of bones. In this state, you can see and hear as normal.
Rest in Pieces
when you drop to 0 hit points rather than falling unconscious, you can choose to instead be separated into 4 parts: Head, Torso, Arms, and Legs respectively, which are scattered in a 10 foot radius where you fell. Each of your parts has a number of hit points equal to your level. If by the end of your next turn at least one of your parts has hit points left, you reform and spring back to your feet with half your hit point maximum, back to the spot where you fell or the nearest available space. If all your parts are reduced to 0 hit points, you make death saving throws as normal and you automatically fail the first save. Once you use this feature you cant use it again until you finish a long rest.
