Homebrew Twi'lek Species Details
The Twi'leks are a humanoid alien species whose females are considered very attractive, even by non-humanoid races. For this reason, they have been often enslaved. A Twi'lek is readily recognizable by a pair of long tentacles protruding from their head, which in fact contains part of their brain. Their skin color is highly variable.
Survival of the Fittest
Twi'leks come from another plane or planet named Ryloth, which is extremely difficult to get to using any known methods. They survived in nearly inhospitable conditions, but somehow made their way here. One half of their home was a scorched plane of rock and cinders beneath the eternal eye of their sun, while the other half was a frozen wasteland which never saw the light of day. There was a small habitable zone right in the middle, however, where Twi'lek lived. But even there life was hard, and fierce storms from either side could wreck havoc on a community, forcing many of them to live underground. These harsh conditions granted them incredible resilience to the elements. Even so, not even a Twi'lek could survive on either side for long, and exile to one of these extremes was a common punishment for those who committed serious crimes.
While Twi'lek in their homelands will usually look out for each other and the survival of their species, those who fled their home of Ry'loth tend to be of the more selfish variety. These Twi'lek range from good to evil, but typically avoid lawful alignments. Twi'lek have natural survival instincts, and will do what it takes to survive.
Exotic Appearance
It is nearly impossible for a Twi'lek to blend in, and as such are usually viewed as outsiders or far travelers. Their exotic beauty fetches them a high price on the slave markets, and it's not uncommon for wealthy or influential people to pay top price for a Twi'lek to accompany them in public. As such, it's not uncommon for a Twi'lek to make their livings as dancers, entertainers, escorts, or public officials if not outright sold into slavery.
Twi'lek don't hold themselves to the same constraints as most mortal races. As such, modesty and pride are often luxuries they do not bother with. While they will typically dress in a matter appropriate for their host civilization, it is not uncommon for Twi'lek to wear only as much as is absolutely necessary.
Twi'lek skin color varies drastically in shades and colors, though almost always it will be a very bright and vibrant hue. The most common color of Twi'lek seems to be blue or green, but their color matters little to them both on a biological and cultural level.
Nimble Minds
Twi'lek aren't typically built for brute strength, preferring instead to dance around physical conflicts. They are lithe and agile, but also quite clever, and many are the people who have believed they had the upper hand against a Twi'lek only to find they had escaped, set up a trap, or otherwise eluded their supposed captors. While a Twi'lek seem to have a hard time blending in with other races, if you actually try to find one they are nowhere to be seen.
Empathic Bonds
Twi'lek posses a dual pair of 'Lekku', or 'head-tails' as they are known in common. These are not merely cosmetic, as they allow Twi'lek limited empathic abilities. Twi'lek can even communicate silently between each other using limited telepathy with them, though just in simplistic manners such as feelings, senses or intent.
A portion of their brains are inside these lekku, and serious damage or severing one may cause intense damage to a Twi'lek's mind. That said, some Twi'lek have lost a lekku and managed to continue a normal life with artificial replacements, so it's unclear exactly how critical these are to their mental well-being.
Twi'lek Names
Rather than having separate personal and clan names, a Twi'lek would have a single name that combined these two elements. The personal portion of the name would be selected with the clan name in mind, often involving an intentional alteration of the words or a shift in the letters to change the meaning of the name as a whole. This change was meant to symbolize a way of unity. A Twi'lek's name would also be split into multiple parts if they were exiled as a criminal or abandoned their people, as this was considered very dishonoring.
You can often judge a Twi'leks level of respect for an individual based on if they combine their first and last names together. For example, if they called someone 'Gary Gygax', it would indicate a low opinion of them. But if they called them 'Garygy'gax' it would be a sign of high respect. As most Twi'lek on this world have abandoned their people, they would likely separate their own name out of a feeling of dishonor. Should they feel that honor has been regained, they may again connect the two.
