Homebrew changeling (fey origin) Species Details
history is vague: descendants of fey trickers, not dopplegangers or fiends. a lot of these traits are more balanced versions of the official traits from eberron (like unsettling visage). you can change this depending on the lore but i'd generally say they're generally considered old wives' tales or are extremely uncommon, as most of them obviously take up alternate identities.
changeling (fey origin) Traits
Changelings inherit skills from their trade and from their fey lineage.Ability Score Increase
Your Dexterity score increases by 2.
Age
Changelings age slightly faster than humans, though due to their ability to change shape they are able to conceal their true age.
Alignment
Elves love freedom, variety, and self-expression, so they lean strongly toward the gentler aspects of chaos. They value and protect others’ freedom as well as their own, and they are more often good than not. The drow are an exception; their exile into the Underdark has made them vicious and dangerous. Drow are more often evil than not.
Size
Changelings tend to be slim in build, slimmer than elves, when in their natural state. They are Medium in size.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision
Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Fey Ancestry
You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Unsettling Visage
For just an instant, you contort your face in horrible way in order to disorient an opponent. In combat, you can use your reaction to gain advantage on your attack roll, or impose disadvantage on an attack roll against you. You must use this feature before knowing whether the attack hits or misses. The creature must be able to see your face, not immune to fear effects, and not suspect you are a shapeshifter. Using this trait reveals your shapeshifting nature to any creature within 30 feet that can see your face. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and two other languages of your choice.
Divergent Persona
You gain proficiency with one tool of your choice. Define a unique identity associated with that proficiency; establish the name, race, gender, age, and other details. While you are in the form of this persona, the related proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses that proficiency.
Change Appearance
As an action, you can change your appearance and your voice. You determine the specifics of the changes, including your coloration, hair length, etc. You can also adjust your height and weight, but not so much that your size changes from medium. You can make yourself appear as a member of another humanoid race you have seen, though none of your game statistics or abilities change. Your musculoskeletal structure does not change, and as such you cannot create functional wings, horns, fins, tails, etc.
Even to the most astute observers, your changed form is physically indiscernible from the race you are copying. If you rouse suspicion, or if a wary creature suspects something is amiss, you have advantage on any Charisma (Deception) check you make to avoid detection. This does not apply if you are copying an individual known to the observer.
You stay in the new form until you use an action to change your form or until you die.
