Homebrew Dog Species Details

A dog is a dog.

Dog Traits

The Great and Powerful Doge has an array of abilities.

Ability Score Increase

Your Charisma score increases by two, your Strength score increases by one, and your Dexterity decreases by 1.

Age

Dogs such as yourself live slightly longer lifespans than normal dogs, due to the magic flowing through them. A Dog reaches adulthood at around 1 year old, and can live up to 30 years.

Size

Dogs come in varying shapes and sizes, and are usually between 2 and 4 feet tall, and weighing 150-250 lbs. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Dogs are swifter than most bipedal races. Your walking speed is 35ft.

Awakened Familiar

While you cannot physically speak, your master imbued you with magical energy to allow you to communicate with those around you. You can speak telepathically to any creature you share a language with within 30ft, though they cannot respond telepathically unless they can already do so otherwise.

Bite

Your teeth are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Heightened Senses

You have an exceptional sense of hearing and smell. You gain advantage on any Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.

Calming Presence

Your presence is calming to other non-hostile animals and humanoids. You have proficiency in the Animal Handling and Persuasion skills.

Canine Pounce

You can burst forward with a sudden rush of strength. When you grapple an opponent, they must make an additional Strength(Athletics) check, or be knocked prone. The DC for this check is equal to 10 + your Strength modifier.

Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Canine Build

Any climb that requires hands and feet is especially difficult for you because of your canine build. When you make such a climb, each foot of movement costs you 3 extra feet, instead of the normal 1 extra foot.

Languages

You can "speak" and read Common, and one additional language of your choice. This could be a language your former master knew.
