Homebrew A'aberi Species Details
Scholars of The Natural World
Both before and after their temporary extinction, the A'aberis have gained much of their renown from their deep studies of the natural world and their contributions to science. No other race or people can match even half the knowledge of the A'aberis. One of the most well known philosophies of the A'aberis is that nothing and no one should be counted good or evil until it has been thoroughly studied. This belief is strongly applied to their studies, especially those of death, disease, and many other natural occurrences that most others consider "evil". The A'aberis study not only study these things, but they also believe them all to be sacred parts in the grand flow of life. The A'aberis do not fear death, nor do they mourn the deaths of others, for they know that their life force is returning to their world. This same belief, however, has created a deep and abiding loathing for the practice of necromancy, which they believe disturbs the flow of life they hold sacred. Necromancy is perhaps the only thing that can incite anger in an A'aberi.
Returned From Extinction
The A'aberis' nation, which was not a true nation but was instead a large collection of allied cities and villages, sat in the A'aberlands. The A'aberlands were a beautiful place where mushrooms grew as tall as trees, the water flowed like liquid crystal, and none of the native animals fought or killed each other. When the Ilytrek arrived in the 2nd Era, the A'aberis first sought to help them find their place in the world. The Ilytrek responded to their kindness and hospitality by brutally slaughtering them. The blood spilt and innocence destroyed upon the soil deformed the A'aberlands into something unnatural and terrifying: the area that is known as The Dreadlands. Though the A'aberis do not fear death, they felt that they should not be allowed to die out. Before they were all killed, the few survivors saved the bones of many of their kind, and then gave their lives to magickly protect them, in the hopes that their race could be revived at some later point. Fortunately, they did not hope in vain; a group of adventurers found their hidden bones and used them to revive the once-extinct A'aberis. After their return, they set to work nurturing their homeland back to its original, majestic form.
Masters of Lightning
When the A'aberis' studies turned toward lighting, they became perhaps the first people to learn how to harness it without the use of magick. They quickly discovered how it was created in the clouds, and how they could replicate that process using only mundane materials to create machines they call "Generators". They then began to create tools and machines that could be powered by this domesticated lightning they dubbed "electricity". These tools allowed the A'aberis society to advance even faster than before; they learned to use electricity to make light, sounds, and even simple images. People would flock from all over to see the cities of the A'aberis, which were like nothing any of them had ever seen. Not even the plane of Mechanus had the technology of the A'aberis, though it does have its Modrons. When a group of A'aberis visited the city of Hefnul, they marveled at the Cloudtower of the city, which stood 207 feet tall, and when they learned that the only way to ascend or descend this sky-scraping tower was by use of the stairs, they rapidly engineered something they named an "elevator". An elevator is similar to a small room, with a panel of buttons on one wall, but unlike a normal room, an elevator can move up and down. These are not only faster than stairs, but also much less tiring. Unfortunately, the A'aberis were driven to extinction before they could accomplish much else. After their resurrection, however, they quickly began to implement their electricity into even more of Hefnul, which was no longer a farming town with a single tall tower, but rather, a massive city made up of many of towers, many of which are now taller than 300 feet. They brought light to the towers, created electric signs, and totally transformed the ways in which the city works.
A'aberi Appearance
The A'aberis, though their history is muddled by their temporary extinction, are known to have been born in the chaotic plane of Limbo, and their appearance reflects the plane in which they were made. All A'aberis stood between 8-and-a-half and 10 feet tall, with a slender build and abnormally large forearms. Their skin typically ranged from yellow to gold to orange. One of the most prominent features of the A'aberis was the long, flexible horn atop each one's head. These horns are usually flat, and began at the brow of an A'aberi, stretching over and behind the head, lengthening with age. Most A'aberis' horns are white, but some are born with one that is blue, which is believed to be a sign of good fortune. The hair of an A'aberi, which grows in the space under the horn as well as the rest of the scalp, is most often white, gray, black, or, rarely, brown. Many A'aberis display both of their parents' hair colors, with some examples being a mottled brown and gray, or alternating strands of black and white. They also have large insectoid wings on their backs, which fold in regardless of what insect they resemble. The A'aberis' faces also have 6 eyes, with one extra pair slightly above the cheeks, and the other extra pair slightly above the brow, with both extra pairs being smaller and further apart than the middle pair.
A'aberi Names
The wings of the A'aberis vary greatly between families and bloodlines, with families being distinguishable based upon the appearance of their wings. An A'aberi's surname is dependent upon the wings they develop, meaning that an A'aberi will take the surname of the parent whose wings theirs most resemble. The surname is the A'aberian word for the type of insect whose wings the A'aberi's resemble.
