Homebrew Caprine Species Details

Caprine are fey goat-like people many are sure are related to satyrs and fauns. They originated from the mountains of the Feywild, where they are very much held on the fringes of proper elven society as undesirables and unclean. However, any amount of time spent with them reveals they are simply a society of their own, albeit one very different from most elves and fey folk.

They are thrifty and miserly to an extreme degree, using all parts of anything they can find, even to the point of eating things not originally meant to be food just so it won't be thrown away. Yet, at the same time, they will generously share what they have and are a light-hearted and welcoming folk. They have quick moving minds and yet also spend long periods in silence watching over their fields. They weave colorful clothes and textiles, often from their own fur, so that they don't have to trade for it.

Caprine have long suffered persecution and hunting by elves and cruel fey folk, and this is part of what led to their initial departure from the Feywild. They settled on the Material Plane in places similar to their old homelands: mountains and valleys, and steep cliffs and ravines and gorges, and rolling foothills. Here they are commonly trusted as shepherds and mountain guides and as accountants, but little else, for their new-found freedom has made them bold, their playfulness turning to pranks and robbery. While they deep down have a sense of adventure their society is not based around travel and conquest; as such, it is not uncommon for caprine to join up with a group of adventurers on their way through their mountain homes.

Size

Caprine stand from around 4' - 5' tall, with some males tending to be taller than females. They weigh from around 95 - 165 lbs., and their Size is Medium.

Appearance

Caprine are goat-like humanoids, similar to satyrs and fauns: they have furred legs with cloven hooves, as well as a humanoid torso. Their heads are humanoid in profile, but they have goat noses and ears, and males have horns that curl backwards on their heads, in addition to being able to grow beards and goatees. Caprine have fur, usually shades of brown, white, and black, but also on rarer occasions purple or blue. Their eyes are often golden, amber, or brown in color. Caprine also have short tails whose fur is a little more fluffy than the rest of them.

Caprine traditional dress tends towards simple loinwraps, cloaks, and robes; nursing females will usually keep their teats covered but otherwise dress the same as males. They seem to not mind wearing pants(of course adapted to fit their tail), but in general do not care for long garments of any kind during fair weather.

Age

Caprine mature slightly slower and live slightly longer than humans, becoming mature in their early twenties and in good health typically living at least a century or so.

Alignment

Fairly Neutral, with caprine in general being opportunistic but not chaotic or malicious. Though, of course, there have been many examples of caprine of other alignments.

Names

Being a Sylvan dialect, Capric has a number of similarities to Elvish, especially due to the contact between caprine and elves. But it has been noted to include more nasal sounds(and make more use of M and N) and long vowels- most stereotypically long As- as well as labialized consonants, which Common speakers usually translate with a W added on to the letter(e.g. Kw, Mw, Bw, etc.). Another feature of Capric are some of the long vowel sounds being broken up with a glottal stop. This would lead to a Capric name like Vaalmw, Ni'ira, Hiimwo, Mia'ali, Ammakyr, Thammyr, Yrdann, Bwiiryl, and so on.

Caprine secondary names follow the pattern of home/location, child of XYZ; ex.: Mia'ali from the whispering brook, daughter of Hiimwo. Most secondary names are only used when another of the same given name is present, with the home/location half first, or the parent's name if the other is from the same place; a full name is almost never used. The Capric particle used to relate residence is yrn, and the particle used to indicate familiar relations is yl. So, a full Capric name might look like Mia'ali Yrn'Galaasyn Yl'Hiimwo.
