Homebrew Vorlon Species Details

(Yes, this is based on the alien species from Babylon 5).

(This is a version designed to be a possible race for a PC or NPC. There is also another version that gives this race stats to be a full-fledged monster).

History, Society, and Physical Description

Vorlons are an ancient and highly reclusive race devoted to the concept of order. No one knows what they truly look like, as they extremely rarely, if ever, leave their so-called “encounter suits” – highly mechanized life support units that allow the Vorlons to live anywhere. If they do leave their encounter suits, Vorlons automatically influence any being around them to view the Vorlon as an image reflecting an angelic deity of the race of each person seeing the Vorlon. This deception requires a DC 25 Insight check to subvert.

A Vorlon’s true form is a cephalopod-like being of nearly incorporeal psionic energy. They are immensely strong, resistant to damage, and generally do not fear mortal species.

To see a Vorlon in a private setting is a rare thing; to see them in public is nearly unheard of. Any expedition sent into Vorlon territory has never been heard of again. Essentially nothing is known of these creatures’ society and customs.

Vorlons have a translator device installed in their encounter suits that essentially allow them to communicate with anyone and anything at all times. Further, all Vorlons are telepathic and possess powerful psionic abilities. They frequently speak in riddles, whether speaking aloud or via telepathy.

Due to their encounter suit, Vorlons heavily rely on their inherent telepathic, telekinetic, and psionic abilities. They lack true limbs in their suits, meaning they cannot use weapons in a conventional manner.

(Player characters cannot leave their encounter suits; if they did so and something saw through their disguise, they would be too powerful to control).

 Vorlon Names

All Vorlons have an elegant, 1-2 syllable name: “Kosh,” “Ulkesh,” etc.

Vorlon Traits

Due to their encounter suit, Vorlons heavily rely on their inherent telepathic, telekinetic, and psionic abilities. They lack true limbs in their suits, meaning they cannot use weapons in a conventional manner.

Ability Score Increase

Your Wisdom score increases by +2, and your Intelligence score increases by +1.

Age

No one knows how long Vorlons live. They reach maturity at age 50 and can live literally thousands of years.

Alignment

Though morality can vary, all Vorlons are Lawful.

Size

Vorlons are considered Medium creatures while in their encounter suits. They are typically 7 to 8 feet tall and weigh 250-400 pounds.

Speed

In an encounter suit, Vorlons move slowly at a pace of 20 feet.

Languages

Vorlons speak Common and Vorlon, but with their encounter suit's imbedded translator device they can communicate with any creature that can speak a language.

Encounter Suit

Vorlons have an encounter suit to keep themselves hidden at all times. This counts as Heavy Armor (Vorlons gain proficiency in Heavy Armor as well) and gives them an AC of 20. The suit has the aforementioned translator device. The suit also contains the Vorlon’s inventory. Though it lacks true limbs, the suit does have four one-foot-long internal mechanical claws that allow Vorlons to hold individual objects that weigh 1 pound or less. While in an encounter suit, Vorlons have the following restrictions:

  • They cannot physically carry or use anything heavier than 1 pound, and thus interactions with physical objects must mainly be done using their telekinetic and psionic abilities.
  • They cannot run, Dash, or Jump.
  • They cannot wear any other armor or clothing.

Vorlon Constitution

Vorlons do not need to sleep, eat, or breathe. In addition, if they fail a Strength or Dexterity save, once per day they can choose to succeed instead.

Vorlon Telepathy

Vorlons are inherently telepathic and possess a number of mental abilities. They can cast Message at will, as well as Detect Thoughts, Calm Emotions, Suggestion, and Mind Spike once each per long rest. WIS is the spellcasting modifier for these abilities. Vorlons also learn both Telepathic Bond and Dream at level 9 and can cast them once each per long rest.

Vorlon Telekinesis

Vorlon mental fortitude continues with telekinetic abilities. They can cast Mage Hand at will (the hand is invisible), as well as Levitate, Feather Fall, and Hold Person once each per long rest. Vorlons also learn Telekinesis at level 9 and can cast it once per long rest. WIS is the spellcasting modifier for these spells.

Vorlon Psionics

Because they cannot use conventional weapons, Vorlons at minimum have their inherent psionic abilities to rely on in combat. They can cast Eldritch Blast at will, as well as Shield, Misty Step, and Magic Missile once each per long rest. They can add their WIS modifier to the damage of Eldritch Blast, and WIS is the spellcasting modifier for the others. Vorlons also learn Disintegrate at level 11 and can cast it once per long rest.
