Homebrew Awakened Owlbear Species Details

Awakened Origin

Being that they typically aren't natural born (unless your DM says otherwise), an Awakened Owlbear used to be a beast, a wild creature who through some type of magic has gained sentience. Due to this, people tend to be caught off guard or even frightened by their appearance, fearing that they'll be mauled if an Awakened Owlbear decides to let its feral side out. 

 

Newfound Curiosity

With their newly gained intelligence, they are quite the curious bunch. Having their eyes opened to a whole new part of the world that they had been living in, they tend to roam for a few years to try and learn what they can before deciding on what to do with their lives. This curiosity also makes it a bit easy for them to find friends among adventurers who don't mind their company.

Awakened Owlbear Traits

An Awakened Owlbear, a strong creature given sentience via some form of magic. Strong and buff, they're perfect for those who wish to hit a bit harder and still look like a cute, cuddly creature.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Age

Awakened Owlbears mature at the age of 10 and usually live to be around 65 years old.

Alignment

Given that most awakened creatures aren't usually taught a difference between good and bad from a young age, their alignment can vary, based on the first person/group they speak to.

Size

Awakened Owlbears, due to the magics that morph them, they usually range between 7 to 8 feet on average. Your size is medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Talons

Your talons are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
