Homebrew Attalwen Species Details

Love Knows No Bounds

Dwarves and elves have lived together under the same roof and banner for centuries within Uthodurn. Over those years, they have forged ties of mutual respect, and romances and unions between elves and dwarves have also become increasingly common as the years progress. Though such partnerships were initially considered scandalous, they came to be met with tolerance, and eventually celebration. While an elf and dwarf may indeed produce offspring, the curiously stubborn nature of both ancestries produces a child that is either an elf or a dwarf, though a child of either race often inherits minor physical attributes from the other parent. Such children are affectionately referred to as attalwen, or "two-hearted."

A Mixed Lineage

Many attalwen share so much in common with both parents that it's nearly impossible to tell at a glance if they're dwarf or elf. An attalwen can appear to be a short and stocky, yet oddly hairless, dwarf or they can appear as a tall and lanky, and oddly hairy, elf. Many attalwen can hardly be separated from a half-elf born of a human and an elf. Whatever the case, attalwen have two ancient genetic lineages merging together in unexpected harmony.

Poly-Centennial Observers

Attalwen inherit their parents' long lifespans, living for well over 400 years, though seldom do they reach the venerable ages of their elven parent. Those that do are treated as honored elders and their experiences are often sought after by the younger generations hoping to avoid the mistakes of their predecessors.

A Harmonious Diarchy

Uthodurn has the unique distinction of being the only place in Wildemount where dwarven and elven lifestyles and traditions come together within one location. The resulting collaborations have created incredible new crafts and means of circumventing the challenges of the region. Dwarven carving techniques blend with elven arcane knowledge to elevate architecture and excavation capabilities. Historical knowledge of the local vegetation meets refined herbalism to cultivate and grow cold-resistant crops. The crafting and smithing techniques of each lineage entwine and complement one another, making Uthodurnian goods that pass beyond the Greying Wildlands valuable indeed.

Ingrained Wanderlust

With two of the most dangerous, and most lucrative, areas of Wildemount directly to the west and south-west (Eiselcross and the Savalirwood respectively), Uthodurn is a hotbed of adventure. Taverns are frequented by mercenaries and mages who come to seek their fortunes in the cold island tundras or the wild magic-filled forests. Though few return, those that do bring stories of treasure and monsters that tantalize and entrance the denizens of the diarchy. Many attalwen, having grown up underground, long to see the skies and the world for their beauties, even if it means braving dangers that ordinary folk would balk from.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Despite their lineages being known for stubborness or haughty arrogance, attalwen tend not to adopt these traits. Attalwen children are able to see the world in a different way than their parents, and often are a temper to their parents' predispositions.

Elves. "Elves have an aged wisdom that we should strive to reach. Their innate magical nature grants them a perspective that most folks don't have the luxury of knowing. When an elf speaks, it is wise to listen. Still, respect is earned, and no one is without fault. Empathy is better than arrogance."

Dwarves. "Dwarves are some of the finest crafters in the world! Their knowledge of stone- and metalwork are second to none. We can learn much from them. While they can be stubborn and hot-headed, they're also some of the fiercest friends a person could ask for. Arguments are bound to happen, but better to do so over a pint with a friend. Just make sure to pick up the tab afterward."

Humans. "What must we look like to humans? Nigh-immortal kin that will outlive their grandchildren's children. And yet, a friendship with a human is one of the most rewarding things this world can offer. Their brevity is tragic, and yet they persist. May we all strive to approach our lives with the drive and ambition of humanity."

Gnomes. "Funny beings, gnomes. Every room they grace is made brighter for their presence. And yet, for all their whimsy, some of the deepest conversations I've had have been with gnomes. They have a similar lifespan to dwarves and elves, and yet, they don't let complacency take over. They're always moving, always striving toward something. I think they've learned the one thing all long-lived races should learn from humans: enjoy life."

Attalwen Names

The naming traditions of dwarven clans and elven childhood are all but forgotten in Uthodurn. An attalwen is named by their parents as a gift. At any point in their lives, an attalwen can decide that the name they were given no longer suits them and they choose a new name. Although these instances occur fairly irregularly, this change is looked at as a sign of maturity and independence.
