Homebrew Beast, Waterfowl Species Details

For whatever reason, you've decided to play a character that is a duck. There probably isn't going to be an elaborate duck culture in your setting without the intervention of your Dungeon Master, but you know what a duck is. If you don't, then maybe you should reconsider choosing this as your race.

Beast, Waterfowl Traits

As a waterfowl, you're going to share a lot of traits with a duck (if you aren't one already). Though there are some advantages, your maximum hit points and other basic functions that are taken for granted among other races will be stunted. Be very sure you are fine with this if choosing to play as a waterfowl.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 3, your Wisdom score increases by 3, your Strength score is reduced by 2, and your Intelligence score is reduced by 8.

Age

Tragically, your typical duck species is going to have a short lifespan between 5-10 years. A common age of maturity in some duck species is a year.

Alignment

You're a duck. Beasts don't have an alignment typically but if you're playing as this then you may fill the role as an exceptionally heroic or villainous waterfowl. Let's face it, though - your intent here is to probably play as chaotic neutral as possible.

Languages

You can understand a very limited set of words and phrases in a language of your choice, but as a duck you don't have the mental capacity or vocal ability to speak. Any other learned language is equivalent to learning simple commands or phrases in said language. You can communicate with other waterfowl in a manner similar to the effects of the speak with animals spell, however.

Size

Your size may vary depending what species of waterfowl you choose, with the average duck weighing between 2 and 3 pounds and having a wingspan of 3 feet. Your size is Tiny.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 15 feet, your base swimming speed is 20,  and you have a base flying speed of 50.

Beast

You are considered a beast rather than a humanoid.

Bill

Your hard, billed beak is your natural weapon which you can use for your unarmed strikes. If you hit with it,  you deal bludgeoning damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier. Your attacks using your bill have advantage against any creature smaller than you that is submerged in water and bread.

Down Plumage

Your extra layer of soft protective feathers keeps you warm and safe. Your unarmored armor class increases by 1 and you resist cold damage.

Fragility

Your maximum hit points are reduced by 2 and then another 1 point for each of your character levels.

Hold Breath

The duration you can hold your breath is doubled.

Keen Sight

You have advantage on Wisdom (perception) checks that rely on sight.

Lacking Grip

As a non-humanoid beast, some basic features assumed by most races will not apply to you. This includes the lack of hands or any other limb that allows for a grip and limits what you can wield. Instead, you can only hold a single weapon or a shield in your mouth or beak at a time. You also cannot equip weapons that have the Heavy or Two-Handed traits and attacks using weapons without the Light trait are made with disadvantage. Picking up objects requires a free grip and cannot be done if you have a weapon or shield equipped.
