Homebrew Borrower Species Details
The sound of scampering goes unnoticed among the tavern goers, they clash their drinks together and party, unknowing of the civilization in the rafters above them. An entire colony of tiny, little people, who make their lives from borrowing and repurposing things from the other world.
"Don't worry little friends, you can stay right here! Everyone will be too drunk to notice you all anyways. I will see you later!"
- Elda, a Tavern Keeper.
Borrowers are tiny humanoids that live in small communities, they often live in upwards of a dozen different families per whatever building or location they may be found in. They often live in busy places, such as taverns, shops, and markets. They can sometimes be found living in the wilderness, though it is rarer due to the amount of things that can easily ruin their homes.
Though barely reaching 6 inches in height, these Borrowers are as crafty as they come, and can be powerful spellcasters.
Borrower Traits
Borrower's are small, curious, and filled with a sense for adventure. Your Borrower will have these traits;Ability Score Increase
Your dexterity and charisma modifiers both increase by 2, while your strength is decreased by 1.
Fae Blood
As a Borrower, you are classified as a Fae, therefore spells that state they do not affect Fae will not affect you either. But you also are effected by spells that specifically target Fae.
You also speak, read, and write Sylvan.
Age
Borrower's mature the same as humans, though they live longer, up to 150 years.
Alignment
Borrowers tend toward good alignments, it is quite rare to see an evil aligned Borrower. They also tend towards neutral or chaotic alignments, though lawful isn't unheard of.
Size
Borrowers are very, very small, though their height and body shape in relevance to each other is just as varied as humans. They are typically anywhere from 6-7 inches in height. Regardless of your position in that range, your size is Tiny.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 15 feet. Though, due to your tiny body, anything you can find is a foothold, therefore you have a climbing speed equal to your walking speed.
Fragile Fall
Due to your tiny size, falling is very dangerous. Instead of counting fall damage for every 10 feet, it is instead counted for every 5 feet of falling.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and one extra language of your choice. Borrowers typically learn the languages of other peoples they live with, including obscure dialects. They are fond of sprinkling their speech with words borrowed from other tongues: Orc curses, Elvish musical expressions, Dwarvish military phrases, and so on.
Tiny Frame
Due to your size, just about everything is easy to hide in or hitch a ride. You gain expertise in stealth, and also gain advantage on all stealth rolls so long as whomever you are hiding from is not aware that a Borrower may be nearby. (i.e. you are trying to hide from someone who knows that you are a borrower and/or may suspect that you specifically may be nearby.)
In addition, due to your size, you may attempt to hide on a creature of sizes small and up. (such as in the folds of a party member's clothing, the wool of a sheep, etc).
In the same vein of thought, you can easily be carried by a small creature or larger. If the action is unwanted, you have advantage on your grappling save if your opponent has never encountered a borrower, or you specifically, before. You are incapable of grappling any creature of small or larger unless by magical means.
You may pass through another creature's space with no issue, though if targeted with an opportunity attack, the attack has disadvantage on you.
Little Weapons
Due to your size, you can't use most weapons and armor unless fashioned specifically for you. Though, if it is a magic item, you can use your Borrower magic and skills in order to shrink it to your size. This action is immediately undone if you break attunement to the item, are no longer carrying it, or it loses all of it's charges (if applicable).
In addition, any damage you roll using nonmagic means is decreased by 1d4.
Tiny Magic
Any magic casted by your Borrower gains an added damage bonus of your Dexterity modifier, regardless of what your casting modifier actually is.
In addition, you gain the ability to cast Enlarge/Reduce once per 1d6 days, with the following modifications.
- It can only shrink to tiny size, and will do so regardless of the original size of the object or creature. If it is an object, it will shrink until it is relative to your size. You may select up to 6 other creatures except yourself and they can only be willing creatures.
- It is not a concentration spell, and lasts for 24 hours or until the shrunken creatures choose to return to their former sizes.
Glistening Glide
All Borrowers have thin, fairy like wings. However, these wings can only be used to glide and surf. You may move 5 feet horizontally for every 1 vertical foot. In addition, if there are winds strong enough, you can glide along the breeze for a total of 10 feet for every 1 foot.
If the wings are tied or damaged in any way, this ability cannot be used. If the wings are damaged, then you must spend at least three hours repairing your wings. Magic can not repair your wings, only time and lack of use.

Posted Mar 10, 2021This is really well thought out and I love it!!! I specifically looked on DnD beyond to see if anyone had made a borrower race, and yours is amazing to say the least. I love the idea of casting reduce on other people and things to make them shrink to YOUR SCALE
