Homebrew Zalagamor Species Details
The black-skinned Zalagamors are a unique race of beings with bizarre proportions, unusual sensory organs, and a strange overall anatomy. Their heads are smallish, with no noticeable eyes, ears, or nose, only a mouth full of jagged teeth and some few intermittent holes where nose and ears would be. Their torsos look like a barrel-chested, yet thin-wasted human's, and their shoulders are large, broad and knobby in musculature. Eight crystalline-looking sensors adorn their chest and back, four on each side, which are actually their "eyes." Their upper arms are slightly thin compared to many humanoids, but the forearms are much thicker and densely muscled, and both arms are longer than normal for a humanoid build. The rugged hands on each extremity look thick-fingered. From the waist down, the legs look well-muscled and even slightly thick, each proceeding outward from their hips at a slight angle instead of straight ahead, and their feet are generally almost twice the size of other humanoids'. They tend to walk with a loping slouch due not only to their hips but also the natural curvature of their dense spines.
No one really knows exactly where these beings first arose in the world, as even their own tribal sages have no actual memory or legends about when their people came to be. They do know that they were made at least two centuries ago by sorcerous giants, as a bizarre experiment accidentally given true life, and they were exiled for their bizarre hideousness ever since that time. For a great deal of time, the Zalagamors wandered the world, seemingly compelled to continue traveling eastward from their supposed home continent of Fursta, and they crossed that continent, the Dragoncrest Ocean, the continent of Draconia, the Wishingtide Ocean, and they have recently begun traversing the continent of Avalestra. Their lives are purely nomadic, and their tribes have begun moving across the land. Their curiosity seems very great, and they have been slowed by the many interactions they have chosen to have with the many beings and peoples they have encountered. Although some less-affable human villages and orcish tribes have given the Zalagamors a great deal of trouble, they do seem to be capable warriors and spellcasters who should not be underestimated.
Zalagamor Traits
Zalagamor TraitsFrightening Visages
Zalagamors are alien and obtuse, black skinned, with bizarre anatomies that match no other humanoids in the world. They have smallish heads, comparatively, which almost appears like a rubbery black orb atop their neck with a pronounced mouth full of pointed teeth, and it would be otherwise featureless if it weren't for a few nostril holes and ear holes. They are barrel-chested, with rounded and pronounced chests which seem to taper down the torso as their stomach and waist seem to conically meet their hips, which then are splayed out unusually, with each leg set at a slight outward angle thereupon. The legs are uniformly muscled, but by their build and their thick, curved spine, Zalagamors hardly ever stand fully "upright" on their legs, and instead, they have a hunchbacked amble on legs that are almost always bent at the knee. The legs end in large feet which are almost twice the size of other humanoids, and tend to have thick toes.
Bizarre Looks, Calm Minds
These odd beings are utterly alien and strange in appearance, but they are the subject of a sort of scientific experimentation, and they were kept for a short time by the giants who created them as servants, until the giants agreed that they were just too weird and ugly to keep about. Many were taught magic and runes, however, and all of them were simply exiled with a sort of "no hard feelings, but get out" approach. The Zalagamors didn't even seem to mind that much, as most possessed enough curiosity about the world that they were glad to be given a chance to explore it. At first, they set out in all directions, but some inexplicable force continued to compel them eastbound, and that mysterious compulsion continues to this day. They formed into peaceful nomadic hunter-gatherer tribes for safety, and they've continued their mass exodus for almost two hundred years. None remain now who remember the days of their kind's making, but all value the lessons of the first generations, and mostly, those Zalagamors espoused peaceful exploration as the best way for their people. Despite this love of peace, however, they were reared originally by giants, and that giantish savagery still remains a viable part of their mentality. As such, despite all their talk of peace, many are quite ready and surprisingly capable in conflict, and they train capable warriors and spellcasters as a result.
Tribal Nomads
Zalagamors are tribal by necessity, and nomadic by perpetual desire. As yet, none of them have shown any willingness to acquire territory of their own, and they seem to lack any form of social structure that would help them govern an area's resource usage. Instead, they rely on tribal leaders who simply show themselves to be the best and most capable survivors. Their tribes do not pick from any certain birthright or lineage, instead choosing something more akin to a meritocracy. Most Zalagamors seem to lack much sense of personal ego, so even a "leader" or chief may defer to others to lead for a time if it seems that Zalagamor is more capable of leading their tribe through the trials of the day. These people don't have much sense of wealth or social standing that would accompany it, but they do value money for its usage in trading with other peoples. Zalagamors are typically considered pretty neutral in regards to law or chaos, but almost all see that there is value in helping one another survive as much as possible, and can be considered good-natured as much as they are peaceable.
Zalagamor Names
Zalagamors mostly speak Giant, and their names are commonly the names of certain animals, plants, or geological features in that language. Males and females alike are given such names, with little deference.
Zalagamor names: Hund, Katze, Kaninchen, Fische, Edelweiss, Tilia, Gul, Hana, Bergen, Gebirge, Junt
Ability Score Increase
Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.
Age
Zalagamors age slightly faster than humans, and live shorter lives. They reach adulthood around 12 years old and live to be about 40-50 years old.
Alignment
Zalagamors don't have many laws beyond the rules that makes the most sense for survival. Their tribes may respect local laws so as to maintain affable peace, but they impose few rules on the, selves and are mostly neutral regarding law or chaos. They believe in supporting and maintaining each other as much as possible, and value peace highly, so it could be said that they are typically good.
Size
Most Zalagamors stand between 6 foot tall and 6' 8". This is their height as they stand in their perpetual slouch though, and most can temporarily rear up into a taller posture by extending their legs fully and pushing their backs more upright. This actually can make one appear to be as tall as 9 feet tall in some circumstances! They weigh between 200 and 270 pounds, on average.
Speed
Zalagamor base walking speed is 30 feet, and you do not reduce your speed while wearing heavy armor.
360 Degree Vision
Zalagamors do not have normal eyes, and instead have crystalline-looking sensors on their chest and back that they see through. This enables them to see in a complete 360 degree visual arc rather clearly out to a range of 60 feet. They cannot be surprised by any event or target that would be inside that field of view, even if they are sleeping, unless that target successfully had been hiding from them previously. They do see clearly beyond this radius as much as normal eyes might see, but to slightly less visual detail than normal humanoids see. Their eye sensors also cannot be strobed into a state of blindness by bright flashes, but continual blinding light will blind them as usual. Poking or punching a sensor does not blind it, but a weapon wound will. Covering all four sensors on their back or front respectively blinds their view to a 180 degree field, so most Zalagamors do not wear armor, cloaks or clothes on their torsos unless they are accommodated with holes for their eye sensors.
Knobby Arms
A Zalagamor has very muscular arms, even if the musculature looks bizarrely displaced. As such, they have advantage on all Strength ability checks to lift, push, pull, or drag heavy objects, and their weight limits for those actions are doubled. A Zalagamor who throws an object adds half again as much distance to the ranges of the throw.
Solid Slouch
The hunched natural stance of the Zalagamors in tandem with their long arms and large feet leaves them able to readily secure themselves in a sort of "four-point" stance. If an effect would move you against your will or knock you prone, and that effect allows you to make a saving throw against that effect, you may use your reaction to gain advantage on that saving throw. Securing yourself in this way also reduces the amount of movement any effect can move you by 10 feet, to a minimum of 0 feet.
Terrifying Appearance
Zalagamors are absolutely freakish and scary to other humanoids, which has the advantage of being quite intimidating, but the disadvantage of not leaving room for social graces. Zalagamors have advantage on Charisma (Intimidation) checks, but they have disadvantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks.
