Wormy Anatomy

While most look at a Coomi Coomi and wonder how they could possibly build, hold swords, and manipulate the world around them; the Coomi Coomi surprises them all with the muscular and dextrous breathing holes on the side of their bodies. To pick up an object, they pucker their soft fleshy orifices slightly, herniating them to make contact with a handle or rock, and then retracting back inward taking the object with the rest of the flesh. While Coomi Coomi have many of these holes toward the head end of their bodies, they can only hold two things at a time without becoming winded from the lack of oxygen. To build their underground homes in loose sand, Coomi Coomi have cementing spit that compacts the sand and makes it solid. Coomi Coomi are omnivorous, and farm root vegetables at the surface of their colonies, pulling them down below when fully grown. They hunt to supplement their diets staying just beneath the surface of the earth waiting for a beast to come along before they pop out to eject a spear or cast magic missile. If a burrow loses access to oxygen from a cave-in or a fire, Coomi Coomi enter a torpor lowering their three heart rates, and staying completely still until they are dug out by a companion. Coomi Coomi hatchlings, can't do much except eat, and hold tight to walls, but they glow a faint blue color so they are often placed around the village to illuminate corridors and artwork.

Subterranean Folk

Long and strong, the Coomi Coomi spend most of their days excavating massive underground tunnel systems for farming root vegetables, confusing would-be predators, and simply for the architectural satisfaction of creating something elaborate. Coomi Coomi are very social people and Coomi Coomi villages often feature a large chamber for festivities that include singing, dancing, burrowing races, and writhing about in big piles. Coomi Coomi place no faith in authority or gods and instead prefer egalitarian communal life. While most Coomi Coomi are peaceful, many take up arms to combat the occasional invasion of Ankhegs. Another important room in a Coomi Coomi village is the brood chamber; Coomi Coomi are hermaphroditic and lay large shiny eggs that are then externally fertilized once a year in a ritual. Each member of the village will lay their egg in the same large hole then add the "other component" churning the mixture while singing Coomi Coomi songs. All of the eggs hatch around the same time just as the vegetable crop ripens.

Interactions with other Groups

Coomi Coomi live in the middle of massive deserts, and as such don't often come into contact with other sentient races; when they do, they are cautious as many who see them assume them to be monsters, and attack. When a village grows too large, bands of Coomi Coomi will set off to found a new home occasionally putting them in contact with the lands of nomadic people which can cause conflict.
