Homebrew Warforged Vanguard Species Details
Armored Expeditionary Force... of One
As a Vanguard, you were always first in and last out of any battle. You were assigned the bathe in the bloodiest of battles, wade through the thickest of jungle, and crush the fiercest of opposition.
You are by no means stupid, but your mind and body were simply not made to contemplate the mysteries of magic. You were made for one purpose; to crush your opponents mercilessly. Now free, what will you do? Will you defy convention and pursue an arcane or even divine calling? Or will you lean into your strengths? No one can answer these for you.
A few things will always ring true; whatever you do, you lean into it hard, eschewing any shortcuts. You do it right, you are fully committed to it, and you never stop.
Warforged Vanguard Traits
As a warforged of the Vanguard your character has the following traits. A few of the traits give you a choice; consider how your choice reflects the purpose for which your character was built.Ability Score Increase
Your Strength and Constitution scores increase by 2, and one other ability score of your choice increases by 1. You must choose two scores to lower by 1, or one score to lower by 2.
Age
A typical warforged is between two and thirty years old. The maximum warforged lifespan remains a mystery; so far, warforged have shown no signs of deterioration due to age. You are immune to magical aging effects.
Alignment
Most warforged take comfort in order and discipline, tending toward law and neutrality. But some have absorbed the morality, or lack thereof, of the beings with which they served.
Size
Your size is Medium. To set your height and weight randomly, start with rolling a size modifier:
Size modifier = 3d6
Height = 5 feet + 10 inches + your size modifier in inches
Weight in pounds = 350 + (4 × your size modifier)
Speed
Your base walking speed is 40 feet.
Constructed Resilience
You were created to have remarkable fortitude, represented by the following benefits:
- You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
- You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
- You are immune to disease.
- You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Sentry’s Rest
When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.
Armored Hull
You gain a +5 bonus to Armor Class. You gain no benefit from worn armor due to your oddly shaped and bulky frame. You roll stealth with disadvantage. If you recieve advantage on stealth from another source, you instead roll stealth with neither advantage nor disadvantage for as long as both effects are active.
Powerful Build
You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.
Darkvision
You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
