Homebrew Awakened Cat Species Details
Awakened Cats are cats that have been given human-like intelligence and consciousness through magic. These cats are generally removed from their past life, but are also driven and guided by their base instincts in some cases. They might not pay much attention to ethics when it comes to killing for food, and probably won't care much for physical possessions, but will usually care for companionship with others if there are advantages to it (humanoid or animal.)
Awakened Cats are generally difficult to tell apart from normal cats at first glance, but magic runs through their veins constantly and radiates outwards, making them identifiable to someone who may be experienced in magic. Awakened Cats are also quite adept at "paw-to-paw" melee combat, and can use their claws to slash at their targets. An Awakened Cat's consciousness can not be disrupted by magic, as it is built into their physical body in ways that pettier magic isn't.
Awakened Cats can range from size and length depending on the breed and age. It is up to the player to decide what breed their cat is, and therefore their cat's specific size. As you might imagine, cats also do not have hands and thus cannot hold most weapons. Generally, Awakened Cats have such powerful natural magic that they can cast most spells with more basic gestures, or you may entirely ignore somatic components of spells. Discuss further details and limitations with your Dungeon Master.
Awakened Cat Traits
Awakened Cat TraitsDomestic Body - Ability Score Adjustments
Awakened Cats, though highly intelligent, still have the body of your everyday domestic house cat. They don't have all that much strength, but they more than make up for it with incredible senses and maneuverability. Your Dexterity score increases by 3, your Charisma score increases by 2, and your Strength score decreases by 2.
Due to their innate magic, Awakened Cats are more resilient than average house cats, so hit dice are still dictated by class and followed as per Rules As Written, or per personal house rules.
Age
Cats reach adulthood at about 1 year old, and can live up to about 20 years. Awakened Cats have similar lifespans, but usually live 5-10 years longer due to their inherent magical energies.
Alignment
Awakened Cats have a wide range of personalities and alignments. Choose whichever suits your character best, but keep in mind that cats are often self-serving and somewhat chaotic.
Size
Awakened Cats are roughly the same size as normal cats, ranging from around 7 to 30 pounds and 10 to 48 inches long in adulthood. Your stature allows you to move into spaces occupied by other creatures, though depending on how hostile they are you may need to be careful about it. Your size is Tiny.
Darkvision
Cats are experts at moving and hunting in the dark, and have Darkvision up to 120 feet.
Languages
Awakened Cats can speak one language of their choosing (usually the one spoken by whoever Awakened them in the first place), and may converse freely with other felines as if under the effects of a Speak with Animals spell.
Heightened Instincts
Cats have heightened senses in comparison to most humanoids, and this remains the same with Awakened Cats. You gain expertise in Perception.
Bred to Hunt
Domestic cats, while tame, are still elite hunters. They are able to sneak towards their prey in absolute silence, and pounce onto their quarry from a decent vantage point. You gain proficiency in Stealth.
Awakened Cats can leap their maximum distance from a stand-still, and you may add an extra 1d4 to an unarmed attack performed after an jumping onto an opponent from a distance of at least 10 feet.
Additionally, you can use your teeth and claws to make more deadly unarmed strikes. You have a Bite attack that deals Piercing damage equal to 1d8 + your Dexterity modifier, and you have a Claw Swipe that does 1d6 + your Dexterity modifier of Slashing damage. This attack may also be performed as a Bonus Action, allowing you to make two strikes with your claws or one bite and one claw strike in the same turn. You are proficient in these attacks, and they are affected by martial arts.
Built for Leaping
Awakened Cats take half of all fall damage. Also, much like normal cats, they will always land on their feet.
