Homebrew Blink Dog Species Details

A blink dog was a mysterious, intelligent canine creature. Most blink dogs had yellow-brown fur and large ears. They were well known for their ability to blink—a supernatural teleportation ability.

Blink dogs had an average intelligence. They had powerful senses, including the ability to see in low light and see in the dark, as well as possessing acute scent detection and tracking.

Blink Dogs on rare occasion attach themselves to a party of good aligned adventurers, treating the party as members of their own pack. Because Blink dogs tend to live in closely knit packs consisting of related individuals, they their loyalty to the party is unwavering. Provided of course they treat the Blink dog with respect and dignity.

Blink dogs while not your average dogs, are still dogs at the end of the day. They enjoy being petted, fed scraps and the like. They are creatures of fey origin and possess an exotic or wild appearance.

Blink Dog Traits

Blink dog characters possess the following traits

Trance

Blink Dogs don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises typically involving the chasing of rabbits.

Language

You can speak blink dog, a complex language formed by vocalizations and body language. You can understand and "write," but not speak, Sylvan. Some unusually well-traveled individuals may also have picked up an understanding of Common.

Blink

As an action you may magically teleport yourself, along with any equipment you are wearing, up to your movement into an unoccupied space you can see. Before or after teleporting you may make a single attack. Shifting does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

No Hands

Unfortunately, you have no hands. You cannot wield weapons or shields. You cannot do anything for which hands are necessary, such as use tools or kits.

Limited Spell Casters

Blink dogs have significant limitations as spellcasters. Since you have no hands, you cannot perform spells with material components, or use a spellcasting focus. You can however, fulfill the verbal and somatic requirements for spells, with ear twitches, tail wagging, and other movements for the somatic and the sounds of blink dog language for the verbal.

Fighting Styles

Whenever your class offers you the choice of a fighting style, you may choose one of these blink dog fighting styles instead.

All the Better to Eat You With...

Your bite does 1d8 damage.

Guard Dog

When a creature you can see attacks a target other than you that is within 5 feet of you, you can use your reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll, by teleporting and bumping your ally out of the way.

Pack Tactics

You gain advantage on melee attack rolls against a creature if at least one of your allies is within five feet of the creature and the ally isn’t incapacitated.

Tenacious Grip

When you succeed with an Attack action during your turn to make a bite attack you may make a grapple attempt as a bonus action. When a creature you have grappled with your jaws uses its action to escape and fails you automatically deal your bite damage.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2, your wisdom increases by 1.

Darkvision

Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Keen Senses

You have proficiency in the Perception skill and have advantage on rolls that involve smelling or hearing.

Fey Ancestry

You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
