Homebrew Automaton Species Details

The automaton wasn't originally supposed to be created. It was just by happenstance that a crazed artificer was working on mixing magic and some of his mechanisms when he encountered an interesting piece of information. Imbuing one of his creations with an animation spell mixed with a piezoelectric crystal will make the spell last until the crystal stops pulsing. Depending on which crystal is used, it could lead to different attributes given to the animated object.

The First Automaton

The first automaton was created by a very powerful artificer who was as ambitious as he was insane. He had mastered craftsmanship and created inanimate automatons made of gears, chains, and crystals for power. The crystal that this artificer used was quarts and very refined at that. This came from a long lost crystal cave that has been in tales and lore for thousands of years. The artificer used the quartz crystal to power the movements of the automaton and as he imbued the first complete automaton with an animation spell the automaton came to life. As the automaton came to life it was created to follow the first order of the caster. The artificer pleaded with joy as he created a new life, but as he was rejoicing he noticed that the creation wasn't doing anything. After a while of pondering he realized that his creation didn't know anything. He frantically made sure that the spell was still being held up by the crystal and it was. As the automaton wasn't doing anything he realized that he needed to give it a task to actually start becoming a being with its own will. What would he command it that would make it become something of its own? Would he tell it to 'learn' or to 'become'? The artificer questioned this for a long time before he eventually came to the best solution. "Learn to Become" he commanded the new being and it suddenly became limp and fell off the workbench it was rested on. After about a day it began to teach its own movements and began learning the language of its creator. After a while, the artificer was proud of what he had created and sent it out into the new world. This was the first journey of the first automaton. To Learn to Become.

Mechanist's Power

Your automaton isn't just powered by the sheer force of concentrated power that your creator put on you. You are powered by a piezoelectric crystal that pulses like a heartbeat inside you. The crystal that your creator puts inside of you gives you advantage on ability checks and saves against the powers that the crystal gives off.

Mortal Shell

You were constructed with a metal body that was encased in a rubbery shell that would act as skin. Your creator, The Artificer, wanted you to live a full life without people poking and prodding at your construction, so they built a shell for you that would give you the facade of a human. If you are below 1/2 of your max hp, you have disadvantage on charisma checks.

Bind Wounds

Your creator granted you the ability to heal small wounds on yourself that would reveal you to be not human.
