Homebrew Ascended Mimic Species Details

When Arthos returned from the old ruins, he seemed somewhat different... His personality had changed, as had his ideals in life, but it was unmistakably him in appearance and voice. Or rather, that's what everybody thought. As time passed, Arthos failed to age along with everybody else, and his appetites and ambition merely grew and grew. One day, he set off for the wider world. Nobody has heard from him since.

Sometimes, if a mimic consumes enough intelligent victims, they can grow to a size and sentience that allows them to mimic humanoid creatures, right down to the ability to speak and even wield magic. These mimics are almost indistinguishable from normal people, but are still driven by their hunger - both literal and metaphorical. Ascended mimics can change themselves to look like any race or gender that they encounter, as well as retaining their ability to disguise themselves as physical objects.

Monstrous Hunger

Mimics can come about in many different ways, and one ascending to a higher intelligence is rare - but not unheard-of. However, one thing always remains consistent between them: Their hunger.

Whilst the ravenous appetite of the mimic is seldom sated, it can sometimes be substituted by more metaphorical things. Some mimics crave wealth, and power, while others crave adventure, or attention. Some may even be more esoteric, craving knowledge, or music, or specific kinds of environments. But their hunger determines almost every action they take, and their ultimate goal is always to be satisfied.

In creating an ascended mimic adventurer, consider the character’s desires and appetites, both literal and figurative. Does the character hunger for the flesh of others, for vast sums of money, for influence? Or for something even more unusual?

Masters of Disguise

Mimics in the wild have developed the unique hunting strategy of changing their amorphous bodies to blend in with their environments in order to trick their prey into coming close. Ascended mimics retain this talent, able to disguise themselves as anything from chests to doors. However, they have also gained the ability to change their bodies to resemble other races and sexes. An ascended mimic can transform themselves to resemble anybody they see, going so far as to mimic the target's voice. However, their personality and ideals will always remain the same.

Some ascended mimics will choose a "preferred identity" which they will adopt as their primary appearance. This appearance is usually based on somebody they have seen in the past, but can change and become something more unique as the ascended mimic's own personality develops.

Ascended Mimic Names

The idea of names is somewhat new to ascended mimics, and they often adopt the naming conventions of whatever culture they find themselves mingling with. Although some ascended mimics have developed a psuedo-cultural idea all of their own, and will choose a name indicative of their desires in life.

Ascended mimics have a fluid relationship with gender, seeing it as one characteristic to change among many.

As an action, you can change your appearance and your voice. You determine the specifics of the changes, including your coloration, hair length, sex, height and weight. You can make yourself appear as a member of another race, or as a nonmagical object of medium size, although none of your game statistics change. You can’t duplicate the appearance of a creature or object you’ve never seen. Your clothing and equipment aren’t changed by this trait, but do become hidden if you disguise yourself as an object.
