Homebrew Zyphoctian Species Details

They're squishy and small and talk in quiet voices. They might imitate two legged locomotion with their gelatinous tentacles. Their forms vary wildly but usually have tentacles, a bulbous body, transparent skin, some amount of a fur like covering, and a good amount of eyes. They have a language that is relayed through chemical signals rather than speech or movement.

Most Zyphoctians are seen as relics of ancient past. They're not taken seriously by many of the major imperial races, despite being natives on their planet. Their civilizations range anywhere from tribal to metropolitan, depending on where you go. Many Zyphoctians come from large families, and often do not know everybody in their brood.

Age. Most Zyphoctians have a lifespan of around 400 years. Zyphoctians follow a life cycle that closely resembles that of a jellyfish. A brood of jellyfish starts as an egg and eventually grows into a rooted polyp. Once the polyp grows to maturity, a group of ephyra. This process takes around 3 years. Zyphoctian ephyra start with the intelligence of a human infant. After some time, the ephyra grow into the Medusa stage which begin with the intelligence of a human teenager. Most Zyphoctians are around 26 to 35 years old when they enter the medusa stage.

Ability Score Increase

Shocking Touch

Any creature that grapples you or otherwise comes into direct contact with your skin must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or become paralyzed for 30 seconds. An effected creature no longer in direct contact with you can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

You can also apply this poison to any piercing weapon as part of an attack with that weapon, though when you hit the poison reacts differently. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed for 30 seconds.

Slippery When Wet

This feature only applies if you have submerged yourself in water or oil, and have not dried yourself off in the last 8 hours.

Any creature attempting a grapple will have a disadvantage on its Strength check. However, you cannot grapple any creature that is Medium or larger

Additionally, you are weak to Cold Damage.

Lots o' Limbs

You gain proficiency in Slight of Hand

Camouflage

As a Zyphoctian, your body can morph into any number of things that you would find in the ocean.

As a bonus action, you can camouflage into any creature the same size as you. If you are Small in size, you can transform into any object that is around 1ft^3 in size. If you are of Medium size, you transform into anything that is 2ft^3 in size. You can also do this out of combat.

So long as you meet the following conditions, you gain advantage on Stealth checks and when asked to do a Stealth Check, you may choose to roll Deception instead.

The conditions are as follows

  • You have unequipped any armor and emptied your hands. (This does NOT include clothes)
  • The target you are making a Stealth Check for has not seen you transform.
  • If you are impersonating an inanimate object, you are not moving.
  • The target you are making a Stealth check against does not touch you. (Note: If you look like a fish and the merman you're hiding from bumps into you, he's probably not gonna think anything of it)
  • Break character in anyway e.g. sneeze while you're disguised as a barrel.

You cannot transform if you're paralyzed, grappled, shocked, frozen, restrained, or otherwise unable to move.
