Homebrew Corydon Species Details

Sworn to Entertain

The life of a Corydon is a simple and exciting one, for they live only to entertain. As such, they typically live on the road, travelling from town to town eager to bring their show to everyone. These shows can range from harmless tricks such as juggling bouncy balls, riding a unicycle, or dancing to silly music, to more intricate, often deadly acts like jumping through rings of fire, swallowing greatswords, or jumping in a hydra's maw.

Corydons do this work in service of a Clown Conclave, or Clownclave: large, mysterious organizations of Corydon, each with their own brand of tricks and shows to entertain their respective target audience. The Clownclaves train their members for four years, and afterwards often send them to locales of varying degrees of danger, with the sole purpose of entertaining the denizens they may find there.

A Mysterious Ritual

The creation of a Corydon requires an ancient, secretive ritual to be performed on a member of another race, the details of which are only known by the Clownclaves. Most people seek out this ritual willingly, riven by the quest to bring fun and joy to the world. Some of the more evil-inclined Clownclaves, however, have been known to perform this ritual on unwilling creatures captured after one of their shows. During this ritual, powerful magic courses through the individual, transforming physical characteristics into something more resembling a clown of the Clownclave performing this rite: their hair might puff up and turn unusual colors, their noses or ears might grow or shrink to comical sizes, their expressions might become permanent smiles or scowls, and most importantly, their faces are permanently covered in make-up, the source of a Corydon's power.
