Homebrew Woolly Loxodon Species Details

Behemoths of the North

Woolly loxodon differ from their southern brethren, having a thick coat of hair, usually of brown or gray color, but some of them appear to be more black or white in their hue. Their tusks are larger than the more common loxodon, and they have more muscle on their bodies. They usually weigh around 500 pounds, and are slightly taller than the common loxodon, often growing taller than 7 and 8 feet tall.

They are perfectly adapted to life in colder climates, and are far more resilient than most other races. Not only do they resist the cold, but they thrive in it.

Tribal Outlanders

Woolly loxodon live in tribes, often referred to as herds. Most woolly loxodon are nomads, preferring to wander the north, over settling down. They enjoy spending their time in the wilderness, and while they do appear in towns and cities, they rarely spend a lot of time there. The very few who do settle down usually do so on their own or for belief of a greater purpose.

In woolly loxodon herds, community is one of the most important aspects of life. Everyone has a value, regardless of their overall contribution. If a member of the herd is not providing much to the tribe, the others will try help him or her better themselves. However, they do not take kindly to unloyalty, and anyone that would tarnish their pride is exiled from the herd.

Loxodon Names

A loxodon’s name includes subtle tones, produced in a loxodon’s resonant nasal chambers, that indicate status, family connection, and community role. Since most non-loxodons can’t distinguish these underlying tones, let alone produce them, loxodons often translate them into titles, such as Hierarch, Revered, Grandmother, Healer, or Saint, when interacting with other races.

Woolly Loxodon Traits

When you create a loxodon character, you may choose the woolly loxodon as an alternative to the ordinary race in Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica. For your convenience, the traits of the loxodon and the woolly loxodon are combined here.

Arctic Survivor

Your thick coat of hair gives you resistance to cold damage. You do not suffer any penalties to Wisdom (Perception) checks in snowy weather and you ignore difficult terrain created by snow or ice. Additionally, you add double your proficiency bonus to Wisdom (Survival) checks when you are in colder climates.

Tusks

Your tusks are larger than that of the normal loxodon, and are therefore better suited for combat. Your tusks are natural melee weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. Your tusks deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier. You are considered proficient with your tusks.

Ability Score Increase

Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Age

Loxodons physically mature at the same rate as humans, but they live about 450 years. They highly value the weight of wisdom and experience and are considered young until they reach the age of 60.

Alignment

Most loxodons are lawful, believing in the value of a peaceful, ordered life. They also tend toward good.

Size

Loxodons stand between 7 and 8 feet tall. Their massive bodies weigh between 300 and 400 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Powerful Build

You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Natural Armor

You have thick, leathery skin. When you aren’t wearing armor, your AC is 12 + your Constitution modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield’s benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor.

Trunk

You can grasp things with your trunk, and you can use it as a snorkel. It has a reach of 5 feet, and it can lift a number of pounds equal to five times your Strength score. You can use it to do the following simple tasks: lift, drop, hold, push, or pull an object or a creature; open or close a door or a container; grapple someone; or make an unarmed strike. Your DM might allow other simple tasks to be added to that list of options.

Your trunk can’t wield weapons or shields or do anything that requires manual precision, such as using tools or magic items or performing the somatic components of a spell.

Keen Smell

Thanks to your sensitive trunk, you have advantage on Wisdom (Perception), Wisdom (Survival), and Intelligence (Investigation) checks that involve smell.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Loxodon.
