Homebrew Wolfman Species Details
Small and Powerful
Wolfmen are the shortest of the races averaging only about 5 feet tall. Their height does not inhibit the inherit fighting ability of the race. They are small targets for ranged fighters and they are very quick and strong. They are able to nimbly evade fire while charging at the enemy and leap onto them. Their bodies are covered in fur and they rarely wear much clothes or armor. Leather armor is the only exception since it does not restrict the movement of the Wolfmen while still providing some protection. They use their natural weapons as much as their constructed ones. In addition they have superior hearing and sense of smell over most other races. Their large ears and long snout are the attributes that give them this, unfortunately their eyesight is fairly poor when compared to other races.
The Wolfmen who are weak become Omegas and inherit some inherent magic of the position. Unlike many of the other races, not many Omegas are used in war since much of their power is in influencing individual people. That is not to say that they are not, the most powerful amoung them use the invisible auras around all living things and influence them even the auras that surround armies or groups of people. They can bolster their own forces with bravery and instill fear or unease in the enemy. The race focuses on the schools of enchantment, abjuration, illusion, and a little bit of divination by reading the auras of different people.
Feral Freedom
The entire Wolfmen lifestyle is centered around choice and the freedom of choice. Their society can change in the shift of the wind and a war could spontaneously break out. Every wolf has its own choice and no one, except a more powerful wolf, can dispute that choice.
The Wolfmen territories are divided into different tribal areas that worship a select god over all the other except their leader, Alpha. Each territory is self governing, taking care of its own problems and granting positions to pack leaders to govern things on an even smaller level. This honor is typically given to the strongest wolf in the pack and if the leader is defeated in ritual combat, the position can be taken over by the victor. This goes for almost every position in the pack. An Omega, the lowest rank, can only challenge a Patroller, the next highest, for their role. In turn Patrollers can only challenge Hunters, Hunters only challenge Warriors, Warriors can only challenge the Beta, and the Beta can only challenge the Alpha. The Omega is originally positioned by the Alpha and is the weakest wolf in the pack. It does the worst jobs like dispensing of the wastes that the rest of the pack leaves around. When a pup reaches the age of eight it must challenge the Omega to bypass it. If the pup loses it becomes the new Omega, if it wins it becomes a Patroller who scours the territory and carries messages between the packs of the territory. Hunters hunt for the packs food, and warriors are pampered until it is time to fight when they become elite warriors almost not rivaled in Dakking. The Beta is the subordinate of the Alpha and is considered a Warrior. The strongest Alpha represents and speaks for the territory in the annual meeting of the packs during the first full moon of the year.
Wolfmen have few stationary settlements as most of their packs need to follow the herds of Hulking Bison in their territory. The settlements are most often found around the forest where Sharphorns are a plentiful source of meat. The towns are mostly used for making weapons and siege weapons for the packs.
Pack in the Sky
The Pack in the Sky refers to the Wolfmen gods. The pack has the same structure as a typical pack with an Alpha, Beta, Warrior, Hunter, Patroller, and Omega. The only difference is that the Pack in the Sky has an Overseer who lords over the entire pack and can not be challenged in ritual combat. There is only one Territory that worships Overseer and they are very favored by Overseer. They are hulking monstrosities with black-as-night fur and claws that are several feet long. They are also much stronger than the average Wolfman lifting close to 300 pounds. These wolves are almost singlehandedly waging a war against the most powerful race in Dakking, these are the Darkwolves.
