Homebrew Barri Species Details
"Does that one ever stop?" "Nah, he's from up North" "Mirabar?" "Nah, the NORTH North." The two stared in relative awe as Nuniq hauled his hundredth log down the trail, cold breath passing his chipped tusks. His large form hunched beneath the weight of the wood, but trudging forward, always trudging forward."
-Tracy Fillmore, Journal of a Working Man
The comforts that most take for granted: ample food, childhood fun, and warmth are luxuries that the Barri can't afford to believe in. They lay claim to the Frozen Wastes deep in the Sea of Moving Ice, where there is nothing that is given. Everything must be earned. In this way they live lives on the precipice of disaster. Every winter promising to take more lives than the last, but they have peace. Theirs is a land no one wants, few can even reach, but that every Barri takes pride in. It is a land that they survive in, and every summer it is one that they conquer.
Large and Stubborn
The hulking Barri stand at 6-7 feet, and their wide, blubbery bodies can fill a room with ease. They are hard to miss because of this size, because of their rarity outside the Frozen Wastes, and because they make no effort to hide themselves. Coyness and passiveness halt work, delay progress, and cost valuable time when your goal lies in front of you, only manners standing in the way. Those who attempt to dissuade a Barri from their paths will find their forms difficult to impede. One track minds with legs like a mule, their visible determination moves most out of their way.
Arctic Fishermen
While life is rare above the ice of the Frozen Wastes, their is a world teeming with food just beneath. Every Barri learns a role to help them hunt these underwater resources, whether
it be sailing, spearing, fishing, or navigating. Each member of a Barri crew must fulfil their role to attain precious resources: meat, fish oil, crystals.
Barri Adventurers
Barri Adventurers are rare as few ever leave the Frozen Wastes. Every person is needed to carry their own weight and more. Adventurers come only from the traders who sail south for supplies unavailable in the tundra. These traders get a taste of a world much bigger than their isolated home. Leaving the Wastes is frowned upon, but honourable Barri can receive a reluctant pass if they finish their year's work early and muster the resources and a boat to leave by themselves: a difficult task to be sure, but Barri are raised in difficulty. Less honourable Barri slip away from their trading crews leaving lethal slack for the rest to pickup. These Barri are not welcomed back to the Wastes.
