Homebrew Chiropi Species Details
MASTER MANIPULATORS
Chiropi are manipulative beings that like to get others to do work for them, often having Kobold, Dwarven, or even Human slaves that bring them food and do most work for them. Chiropi have bioluminescent patches on their undersides that they use to hypnotize their prey or other beings into serving their needs, though they prefer manipulation by words if they can do so, especially since the hypnosis wears off eventually.
Far too heavy to fly, these batfolk walk along the ground, only using their wings to Occasionally glide or to intimidate foes, which they can also do. As masters of manipulation, Chiropi do not build their own homes or cities, they get others to do it for them. When you meet one they seem very polite and inviting, but odds are they’ve already got something they want or need from you. They are subtle, tricky, and often seem honest even if they are not.
The Chiropi love to live in mountain caves, but also like jungles, forests, and will even settle in a swamp if they so please. Chiropi actually hate being alone and adore conversation, so if they find themselves lonely they will adventure in search of companionship. As much as Chiropi love to dominate the wills of others, many secretly desire true companionship or even to find someone who can manipulate them.
KINGS IN THEIR OWN MINDS
Chiropi are also suckers for conversation and love to spend time talking to other civilized beings about whatever they can. This weakness for conversation comes from an inherent self-aggrandizing nature - Chiropi think themselves inherently superior to other races and believe that conversation is the greatest gift they can bestow upon those beneath them.
They also greatly respect anyone who can best their intelligence and prove themselves as their superior. Once they find a superior, they will follow them and act as their herald or second in command, following every order and engaging in conversation with their superior because they desire the gift of conversation with such an immaculate being. As such, Chiropi can occasionally be found in service of Elves, Humans, or other particularly intelligent beings that happen to be around.
Even though their whole life is spent dominating others and being manipulative, they all secretly desire to find someone superior to submit to as well or to find an equal to be genuine friends with. Chiropi are apparently very lonely creatures at heart who desire companionship over all and will only marry someone they consider an equal. An inferior is a servant, and a superior is a master as far as they are concerned. This is backed up by Chiropi religion, wherein a giant primordial bat vomited into the sea and created the land along with planting the first trees and making the Chiropi in his own image to be the supreme rulers of Nafine.
WILDOR’S BAT COURT
In Wildor where the Chiropi primarily live, these big bats are often rulers of small villages and towns, and in the biggest communities are often seen in the high council. Even the largest city, Gamrethon, has its supreme court run by a triumvirate of Chiropi who will threaten or hypnotize information out of suspects.
The Bat Court as it’s known is often accused of corruption and taking bribes, though no evidence is even found of such. Conspiracy theories about the Bat Court are also quite numerous, and some believe they are covertly trying to take over wildor and then the world. The accusations against the court often cause delays in trials which causes backlogs of criminals for them to examine. They often express frustration at barely getting any time to rest. And then people complain that they aren’t doing their jobs. All in all, the Bat Court is not exactly fun to be a part of.
