Homebrew Animated Statue Species Details

When infused with strong transmutation magic the stone masonry of great heroes, historical figures and notable people comes to life. Made purely of the material that they were first carved from, the animated statue is gifted sentience and life as though they were born from one of flesh. Created by wizards of immeasurable power, these statues are usually used as free labour for jobs that could be expensive or inaccessible for others. Sometimes these statues are simply ways for the magic users to flex their arcane prowess by creating life itself.

Unlike other animated creations such as animated armour sets or simple objects given autonomy, an animated statue is infused with the personality, memories and past life of the person they were originally portrayed to represent in stone. If the statue is created to represent someone who has never existed however, the statue is born knowing little more information than what the transmuter has gifted it. Due to this nature most Animated statues are great warriors or leaders from times past, brought to give wisdom in a time where they are no longer in the material plane. Others however use these sentient art pieces for selfish means... to bring a representation of great evil back into a world who did not want them, to recreate a loved one that has passed or to create life easily enslaved.

animated statues (unless altered magically) are aware of their creation, and reason for that creation. They understand they are not the person that they represent, and that sometimes can lead to a great mental toll. It is not unusual for an animated statue to suffer imposter syndrome or be unable to perform basic tasks due to personality issues. Those created with original features usually don't suffer from this issue however and are more liberally seen outside of a wizards tower. Seeing a living statue can be startling, so it is rare walking, talking sculptures will be seen outside of their creators residence, however some have been known to go against their masters so they may live their own life.

Animated Statue Traits

The animated statue is a ruddy creature of great strength and constitution. Their magic essence makes them incredibly gifted.

Antimagic Susceptibility.

Due to their composition when the transmutation magic that gives them sentience is applied the animated statue will become that of a regular piece of art. As the statue is affected by anti-magic they will feel their very being be interfered with, sometimes being able to fight against it and keep their composure. When they cannot compel against the anti-magic the statue will revert to the pose they were originally created to hold.

Ability Score increase

Your Constitution score increases by 2, and one other ability score of your choice increases by 1.

Stone Sleep

When in this state the animated statue reverts to an immovable pose of grandeur or reverence. If they have been created in the image of someone that existed they will dream of the life that person lived, perhaps with inaccuracies or bias from the statue's creator. If the statue is an original creation they will dream of themselves similarly to how people made of flesh do. However some report dreaming of themselves in a form with skin and organs.

Specialized Design

You gain one skill proficiency and one tool proficiency of your choice.

Magical Resillience

  • You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
  • You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
  • You are immune to disease.
  • You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

Armour of stone

When the Statue wears a piece of armour and focus their mind to it, it will seize to their body and be impossible to remove without being willed to by the statue. Over time it will grow to become the same material the statue was carved from, as if it was always a piece of their visage. As the armour is succumbed into the being of the statue it's weight will be added to the statue as a whole. If the armour usually makes noise, it can no longer move or clink together meaning it;s much quieter than before, just making rough grinding noises.

Language

Animated Statues are given the choice for another language as well as common

Dark Vision

Because their vision is created from a transmutation and does not rely on light or biology, the animated statue can see 60ft in darkness as if it were low light.

False Appearance

When standing still without having been seen previously, all enemies will believe that the creature is a statue. The creature should make a deception check with advantage at the end of their turn to make sure they keep up the façade. Enemies cannot attack the creature while they believe it is a statue.
