Homebrew Buglin Species Details
Buglins are a unique race of people. Most live in the deepness of Hollownest, a place far underground. Many were killed or driven mad by what the elders call "the Infection." The kind turned violent, the meek grew strong, and the weak became vengeful. Some were somehow able to escape the deep and peculiar caverns of Hollownest and are now free to the worlds above, away from the nightmares that are the Infected.
This underground race of people, though they are small, can be incredibly strong and can make for great magicians, soldiers, and hunters. Those who have not honed the natural magic of Soul or are not skilled in the art of the Nail are usually creative beings and are wonderful architects, traders, artists, and cooks. Hollownests' many towns and different regions are littered with memories of what became before the infected, and many places, such as the City of Tears, are still structurally sound and have traces of their former beauty.
Buglin Traits
Buglins are naturally protected against the harshness of Hollownest, which they can use to their advantage in the world above.Ability Score Increase
Your Constitution score increases by 2.
Age
Like normal bugs, Buglins age faster then many races, but because of their magical backgrounds, they can live for long times, though the Infested don't live as long due to the threat they hold to travelers. Some Infested live long due to their power, but can still be cut down by stronger Buglin adventurers.
Alignment
Buglins are focused on survival and are therefore unmotivated towards trying to be good or lawful, as well as evil or chaotic. Most buglins tend to be truly neutral, but can be drawn towards either good or evil.
Size
Buglins normally vary anywhere between 3 to 5 feet, and can weigh anywhere between 10 to 50 pounds. Depending on subraces there are exceptions to these guidelines, but most buglins can be classified as either small or medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision
Due to your familiarity with the dark because of your life travelling the wilds of Hollownest, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Soul
As a Buglin, you have direct access to the essence of other living things. This essence is called Soul, and all uninfected Buglins have the ability to use said power. Hitting another creature gives you 11 Soul, and you can use Soul for Focus or Soul Spells, either of which cost 33 Soul to do. At level 1, you can collect up to 99 Soul and use Focus. Focus is a healing power that heals you 1d8 + your Constitution modifier. If you focus during combat, you cannot move after you cast Focus and cannot react or do any sort of bonus actions. You become basically paralyzed.
At level 4, you gain access to Soul Spells. You have a Soul Modifier and a Soul DC. The modifier is your proficiency modifier + your Constitution modifier, and the Soul DC is equal to 8 + your proficiency modifier + your Constitution modifier. The first one you get is Vengeful Spirit. At levels 7 and 10, you get a Soul Spell of your choice. Soul Spells include:
Vengeful Spirit (obtained at level 4): You conjure a spirit made of Soul to fly ahead of you, vanquishing your foes. Make a ranged spell attack. The spirit travels 60 ft and hits any enemy in front of you, causing them 2d8 damage. Anyone in the trajectory of the spirit must make a Dexterity saving throw equal to your Soul DC, and they take half damage on a successful save.
Desolate Dive: You focus Soul into the upper portions of your body in order to hit at the ground with amazing force. When attacking a foe, they initially take 1d8 damage from the dive itself. If the attacked makes a successful Dexterity saving throw, they take no initial damage. After the attack, anyone in a 10 ft radius gets hit with a shockwave that does 1d10 damage, and half as much on a successful Dexterity saving throw. If an enemy had to make a Dexterity saving throw from the initial attack, they automatically fail the second one. After this attack, you cannot suffer from opportunity attacks, but your remaining movement is halved.
Howling Wraiths: You call upon screaming, violent Soul, letting it loose 10 ft above you and 5 ft around you. This pained energy hits your foes three times, doing 1d10 damage per hit and half as much on a successful Dexterity saving throw. If above you, your foe automatically fails their first hit, but if the enemy is beside you and they succeed on the saving throw, they are not affected by any more hits.
Instead of learning Soul Spells, you can choose to upgrade an ability of your choice by 1 at levels 4, 7, and 10.
Easy Resting
Buglins are naturally very energetic and therefore don't need as much rest as other species do. Your long rests are 5 hours instead of the normal 8.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Buglin and Common. Your Common started off rough, considering that Buglins only speak through noises that appear to be words only to them. Common's structure and noises are a lot different then that of Buglin, so you originally find it rough to get through considering that your mouths aren't even built the same as humanoids.
