Homebrew Awakened Shrub Species Details
An awakened shrub is an ordinary shrub given sentience and mobility by the awaken spell or similar magic. Some shrubs may advance beyond just having sentience, gaining more capabilities than their creators could ever have dreamed of.
(I couldn't add a lot of the subrace spells to appear on sheet, sorry)
Awakened Shrub Traits
Your magic infused shrub body has both advantages and limitations.Ability Score Increase
Your Intelligence and Wisdom scores increase by 1, and your Strength score decreases by 2.
Age
An Awakened Shrub's lifespan depends on the type and its conditions, but most can live to at least a few decades.
Alignment
Being created creatures, Awakened Shrubs do not inherently tend towards good, evil, law, or chaos. Some may have absorbed the morality, or lack thereof, of the beings with which they served.
Size
Awakened Shrubs greatly vary in size, standing between 2 and 4 feet tall. Depending on the density of their branches and foliage, they can weigh anywhere between 20 and 55 pounds. Your size is Small.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 20 feet.
Plant
Your creature type is plant, rather than humanoid.
Shrub Body
You have a sparse, branched, flammable body. You have resistance to piercing damage from nonmagical attacks, and vulnerability to fire damage.
False Appearance
While you remain motionless, you are indistinguishable from a normal shrub. However, any worn or held items may be noticed.
Sunlight Dependancy
You do not need to eat, but if you fail to immerse yourself in bright sunlight, or bright white light, for at least 6 hours during a day, you suffer the effects of 1 day without food at the end of that day. Repeated here for your convenience:
A character can go without food for a number of days equal to 3 + his or her Constitution modifier (minimum 1). At the end of each day beyond that limit, a character automatically suffers one level of exhaustion.
A normal day of eating resets the count of days without food to zero.
Roots
You require the regular amount of water for a character, but you are able to absorb water through your roots. When you take a long rest in a spot where a regular plant could absorb water from the ground, you can absorb up to 1 gallon of water during that rest, as long as you do not move from that spot.
You can also spend a short rest with your roots in water, to absorb up to 1 gallon of that water. When you do so, you have advantage on saving throws against waterborne diseases.
You are still able to drink water directly.
Rake
Your pointy branches are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Dexterity or Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike. This natural weapon counts as a melee weapon with the finesse property.
Languages
Awakened Shrubs generally know one language which their creator knew. You can speak, read, and write one language of your choice.
Subrace
Because Awakened Shrubs are created to be mostly identical without the expectation of anything more than sentience, they at first are, only becoming stronger and unique with enough experience. You do not receive any features from your shrubrace choice, except ability score increases, until you reach level 3.
