Homebrew Wildkin (Hare) Species Details

The Kin of Weald are its first peoples, their very history embedded within the roots and branches of the great and noble forest. Animal-like in form, but humanoid in stature and mind, they come in a great variety of shapes and sizes.

The Kin once inhabited all the realm of the Weald, but since the coming of the younger folk, they have been pushed back into but a tiny section of their ancestral home lands. This they called the Hearthglen; and it is guarded with a bestial ferocity, for at its centre, lies the ancient grove of trees where all Wildkin are buried on death. Under these mounds of grass lie parents, siblings, ancestors untold – for to be buried there is to return to the Weave, the magic that flows through all things. Around the Hearthglen they have constructed a mighty wall of wood; they keep watch, night and day, for any incursion on what is theirs. From the glen at its centre flows a series of streams known as the Billayburn, which flow out under the wall, through the Burngate, and down into the great river of Creek.

The Wildkin are a mystical people, who mourn land once lost, but love merriment, song, and especially the eating of food. They are fierce, especially in defence of their own, and notably isolationist – but each possesses a spirit of good will that calls them to aid weary travellers.

The actions of the Wildkin are guided by the voices of the clans. Every spring, the chiefs of the clans gather under the branches of the Hearthglen, between the ancient burial mounds, and elect a High Thane. For the last 29 seasons, the High Thane has been Odda, Chief of the Badgers. Though he is quick-tempered and generally regarded as old and grumpy, he is a fair and just Thane, who has done well to consolidate the lands of the Wildkin.

Their religion is that of the Weald itself. They worship the trees, the streams, the earth and the sky. But, they also venerate the dead that lie beneath the earth, and draw power from their ancestral spirits, and their deep connection to the creatures of the Weald.
