Homebrew Bakeneko Species Details

Small and Unsuspecting

The diminutive Bakeneko survive in a world full of larger creatures by avoiding notice or, barring that, avoiding offense. Standing about 3 feet tall, they appear relatively harmless and so have managed to survive for centuries in the shadow of empires and on the edges of wars and political strife.

Bakenekos’ fur ranges from black, white, orange and calico with length ranging from shorthair to longhair. They have green, blue, yellow or hazel eyes. They like to wear simple, comfortable, and practical clothes, from there homeland and enjoy bright patterned robes.

Bakeneko practicality extends beyond their clothing. They are not concerned with riches and shiny things.  Their goals extend to family, community and health.

Blend into the Crowd

Bakeneko are adept at fitting into a community of humans, dwarves, or elves, making themselves valuable and welcome. The combination of their inherent stealth and their unassuming nature helps halflings to avoid unwanted attention.

Bakeneko work readily with others, and they are loyal to their friends, whether Bakeneko or otherwise. They can display remarkable ferocity when their friends, families, or communities are threatened.

Tinkers and Blade smiths

Curiosity drives most of the Bakeneko found outside their homeland, but not all of them become adventurers. Bakeneko who seek a safer path to satisfy their obsessions become wandering tinkers and Blade smiths.

These Bakeneko work in small troupes, usually consisting of an elder, more experienced Bakeneko who guides up to four young ones learning their way in the world. They travel in small, colorful wagons, moving from settlement to settlement. When they arrive, they set up a small tents where they sell their wares and sharpen blades to extra fine edges.

These wanderers keep to civilized realms, preferring to bargain instead of pursuing more dangerous methods of sating their curiosity. However, they aren’t above a little discreet theft if the need arises.

Exploring Opportunities

Halflings usually set out on the adventurer’s path to defend their communities, support their friends, or explore a wide and wonder-filled world. For them, adventuring is less a career than an opportunity or sometimes a necessity.
