Homebrew Air Mephit Species Details

Ash jumped as a blast of air was fired over his shoulder, which just got him hit with it. Behind him was a goblin-like being, its white hair flowing behind it. Grinning mischievously, it raised its arcane gun to fire a second shot.

-From an account of bounty hunter/poacher Ash the red dragonborn fighting a flock of mephits. He was arrested later that day.

Great Freeing

The Great Freeing was when heroes freed thousands of mephits from a djinni king, Bhushed The Superior. Their will now unbound to Bhushed, they fled to the Tempest Plateau and surrounding mountains. After decades of struggles to survive, they formed stable communities called "clouds". Their main problem was the rocs that frequent the Plateau. However, they have learned to tame them.

 City of Winds

Though most mephits are solo creatures, air mephits are very social. They have large metropolises all over the Plain of Air, the largest of which is called the City of Winds. A bustling town full of shops, attractions, and more. It's one of the top interplanar tourist destinations, which has led to the creation of several permanent Gate spells within the city.

Protective Groups

To protect each other, Air Mephits form groups called "clouds". In each cloud, there is a hierarchy where the lowest members protect the next level up, and so on. The highest members also protect the whole cloud, as they are normally the most powerful mephits in the group. In different clouds, there are different rules and names for the tiers in the hierarchy. For example, in the Stormrider cloud, the lowest members are 'crows' and the highest are 'falcons'.

Airpainter (color-themed):

Breezehunter (dragon-themed):

Appearance

Air Mephits are goblin-like creatures (much like other mephits), but because they are not a combination of two elements, they (along with their earth, water, and fire counterparts) look surprisingly cute. Some of them look like just wisps of cloud barely outlining a shape (although this does not denote less power), while others have a more physical form with bluish skin. Their hair, if any, ranges from cobalt to robin's-egg-blue, is normally kept short, and billows in a perpetual breeze when they cast spells.

Air Mephit Names

Air Mephits do not have gender-specific names, though in some clouds, names tend to get assigned to genders. A mephit puts their cloud's name in front of their own when talking to mephits from other clouds and untrusted non-mephits, for example, "Windfisher Aaron". Most of their names relate to wind, air, and the like.
