Homebrew Daitengu Species Details
The sins of our past are written in history. We were born from the blood of the Ancients to protect the islands of Atokata but the greed and lust for mortal vices were too great, too tempting for our kind. We stole from the ones we were meant to provide for, we killed the ones we were supposed to protect—instead of guardians, we became monsters. Our history is written with the blood of our victims—blood that could never from the palm of hands and the tips of our talons. We can only hope that the deeds we do now to repent, will be able to help heal the scar from our dark past.
Haunted by a bloody past, the daitengu have spent recent history trying to correct their marred reputation and to pay for the sins of their past. They travel across all of Atokata, serving lords and chieftains as advisors but also constantly lower themselves down and aid the peasants and lower class of Akitan society. The burden they carry on their shoulders is heavy, as the world is yet to be ready to forgive the ancestors of the daitengu for their transgressions.
Unwanted and Divided
The daitengu, after finding inner peace and being able to see the error in their ways, were able to fully realize what their purpose was for living. Unfortunately, it would be too late, as society has written them as murderers and heathens—as monsters known as Yōkai. Most daitengu have fully embraced their predicament and work hard to repair their damaged reputation, however, some have given up on ever fixing their relations with the mortal races and have since returned to their old ways, marauding and causing destruction.
Fleeting Yōkai
Above all else, daitengu wish to repair their tarnished reputation with the people of Atokata, however, they remain curious of the world, with some even venturing out westward and seeing what the rest of the world is really like. Though most return, some choose to live in the newfound lands they discover, having their curiosity take the better of them. Daitengu are quick learners and find value in the culture of others, unlike the people they are sworn to protect.
With their wings, the daitengu are able to travel to distant lands, with almost nothing being able to stop them. It is rumored that a with enough fortitude, daitengu are able to fly to insurmountable heights, even being able to break above clouds and fly with no resistance from the wind or harsh weather.
Despite their kind being rare and a descendant of the ancient gods of Atokata, they find friendship with the more avian-like races of the aarakocra and kenku, more so the latter as they share similarities in having a dark history. The daitengu are seen as valiant warriors and righteous guardians, those who choose to do right at least, and become conscripted into factions, serving as champions of a noble lord or that of a king.
Masked Visage
Daitengu are known to wear masks that symbolize their family heritage, with the masks seen by their kind as a symbol of their identity even after their passing. Underneath the mask, daitengu are rumored to be very beautiful, sculpted to have fair and attractive facial features. To see the bare face of a daitengu is an honor among those not of their kind and is considered a blessing.
