Homebrew Clatcher Species Details
No race is as passionate about exploring the world, yet so appreciative of the comforts of home, than the clatcher. These tall, slim goblinoids can be found almost everywhere, ending up in dense cities, remote mountains and deserted islands in their adventurous pursuits of beauty - for it is beauty that they value above all else. It is the ultimate goal of many clatchers to find the most stunningly beautiful landscape, item, or even person, so that they can return home and enrapture their fellows with detailed recounts of it.
Chromatic Hierarchy
The eyes are a clatcher's most valued attribute, for more reasons than one. Their vision surpasses that of most other races, and they can clearly make out details from great distances. The eyes are so important in clatcher society that their entire social order is built around the colour of their sclera-less eyes. A clatcher can have one of five different eye colours, each of which gives it a different standing in the hierarchy. Yellow-eyed clatchers are the lowest, living in the poorer districts of their cities and carrying out jobs none of the others want to do. Blue-eyed clatchers fall slightly higher, and often work as merchants or other reasonably well-paid occupations. Clatchers with red eyes are combat-trained from youth to be the warriors, soldiers and guards of their cities - clatchers with yellow or blue eyes must treat them with great respect. Rarer are the green-eyed clatchers, who are assigned to train in the arcane or divine arts. Clatcher wizards are almost always found with green eyes. At the top of the pecking order are the purple-eyed clatchers - this eye colour is exceedingly rare, and is all it takes for a clatcher to be accepted into the nobility or even royalty.
Labyrinthine Cities
Clatcher cities are literal mazes of streets and alleyways, dimly lit at all times to avoid blinding its residents, whom can see perfectly in darkness. Generations of living in such conditions have led clatchers to evolve a flawless memory for pathways and directions. The winding, confusing streets act as a defence mechanism, to hinder invaders infiltrating the city while allowing the clatchers to make their way without error.
Persistent Explorers
Many clatchers living in the city rapidly grow tired of seeing the same sights day after day. When this happens, they are wont to simply leave, with little ceremony, to explore the world beyond the city walls and see things of beauty. Some clatchers never return home, finding a new place somewhere else in the world and deciding to remain. Others reach a point where they choose to make their way back, and share their experiences with other clatchers by way of stories or artwork, thereby stirring their listeners into exploring themselves.
