Homebrew Abandoned Species Details
What happens when magic goes too far? When powerful people chase after higher and higher aspirations? The answer, most of the time, is something like the Abandoned. A people with nothing left but a pointless existence and traumatic past. Many, many centuries ago, powerful people aspired to challenge the very gods and create new life, with their vast magical knowledge. Using the corpses of many of their own, and quite a few of others, they began to weave their magic into them. Kept deep below ground so as to hide them from all other beings, these people slowly began to create something. A kind of magical consciousness that was unlike any other and, after years of doing this, these new people awoke.
Of course, it didn't end well. The gods were not happy, and cursed these mages, which caused them to die out, one by one, leaving their new beings alone in the world. Without any knowledge of the world or how it works, these people simply existed, surviving off the magic around them, and slowly, but surely forming something more akin to the kind of culture they are today. The Abandoned are few in number, in fact the vast majority live in the same caverns where they were made. But for those who venture out, they find themselves of great interest to the wider world, and are often the center of many wonderous folk tales.
Even now, the Abandoned are a people haunted by their past. The magic inside them which brought them to life, also causes them much pain and suffering, as the remnants from the person they once were interfere with their consciousness every now and then. Random flashback memories and references to their body's previous inhabitant are common among them, and most struggle to find a sense of inner peace. However, even with these horrific features, the Abandoned fight on, slowly learning more and more what it means to be alive.
Their appearance is odd. They seem to be humanoid at first glance, and yet one look in their eyes will tell you something else. They're hollow, empty, with only a red dot for an eye. Their bodies seem normal on the outside, but when cut, they do not bleed. Instead a faint gas escapes from the wound, which some believe to be the magic that runs through them.
(I'm sorry about the photoshop, but I couldn't find the right picture, so I just made do with what I had)
Abandoned Traits
The Abandoned are very in tune with magical forces, and as such have an affinity for all things magical.Magically Touched
Once per long rest, you may use this ability to enhance one spell you cast. You may choose from one of three effects;
If a spell does damage, you can add an extra damage die to your roll
If a spell has a duration, you may double it
If a spell has a range of 10 meters or more, you may double it
Hollow
You exist off the magic running through the world. As such, you need no food or water. However, this leaves you vulnerable to spells like Dispel Magic. While this won't kill you outright, it will weaken you extensively, draining you of all the magic inside you for a short time. A short rest will bring you back to a healthy state.
Once per day, you may attempt to draw extra magic from your surroundings. Roll a d20. On a 15 or higher, you may recover one spell slot, first level for 15 and 16, second level for 17 and 18, and third level for 19 and 20.
A Past Life
Due to the knowledge left over from your past life, you know one first level spell from one spellcasting class. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for this, and you may cast it once per long rest without using a spell slot. You may cast it again, by using a second level spell slot or higher.
Ability Score Increase
Intelligence increase by 2, Wisdom increases by 1
