Homebrew Aso'Teran (V.2) Species Details
Aso'terani are a long lived ancient race, with a life span of up to 400 years. Innately attuned to one of four elements, they are rumored to be the descendants of the gatekeepers to the elemental planes.
In order to compliment their innate elemental abilities, they prefer to live in, or near forest regions where the 4 elements, earth, wind, water, and fire can all be found. As such, they can often be found living in forests, near natural hot springs. On clear, full moon nights, they occasionally gather in secluded forest meadows, harmonizing their magicks with each other in order to find potential mates. This ritualistic dance of elemental magic is rarely seen, but always written to be one of the most beautiful sights ever witnessed.
One With The Elements
The Aso'Terani people carry many features seen in the fairy and fey races. While they do have fairy like wings, their body size prevents them from true flight. These wings are in constant motion during their waking hours, and sounds like a gentle breeze through the trees of a forest. They are able to stop this fluttering, but it takes a conscious effort to do so, liken to picking up and holding an object.
Slightly taller than dwarves, the lithe Aso'Terani hold a great deal of pride in the length of their hair, which shimmers under the light of the full moon, and most will never cut it. They have chiseled features similar to the elf, and long pointed ears, which angle towards the back of their head. Their element is not fully known until they are around 20-30 years of age at a point in life similar to puberty, which they refer to as "Kiahr'kai". During this stage, they manifest a unique trait identifying the element they will wield. Once their element is revealed, those who pursue the magical arts, begin training to control their abilities. Others pursue different directions in life, and do not undergo formal training. Those without formal training learn to control their abilities on their own however, their abilities will be limited to that which is innate. They often use their element for the first time within a week after their trait manifests. Between the ages of 50 and 60, most are able to wield their elemental magic with a mastery that would fill some arch-mages with envy.
Some of the traits that may manifest to show the element that they will wield are:
- As the Wind Kiahr manifests, a natural wind often encompasses part or all of the body of the individual, resulting in their long hair being blown around, or their clothing rippling in a silent breeze.
- As the Water Kiahr manifests, a mist may be felt in the air around them when in close proximity.
- As the Earth Kiahr manifests, their hair often changes to the color of the soil or stone they walk on, but some have also been known to appear constantly dirty, as though their very skin becomes stained by the earth.
- As the Fire Kiahr manifests, a noticeable rise in their body temperature is most often noticed, and can be felt up to 5 feet away.
Harmony is Power
Through their closeness with the elements, and their innate ability to harmonize their magic, they carry the ability to affect the elemental magic of others. This ability has been sought after by many across the land, for spectacular performances of magic, and to provide powerful allies on the field of battle. Some Arch-mages have been known to befriend them in order to study them, and their abilities.
Teachers of Balance
Mostly solitary peoples, the Aso'Terani occasionally venture out of their small communities to sate a growing curiosity of the world, or to answer a higher calling. Although, most will never leave their community, few will reach the edge of their forest, and fewer still will venture beyond to truly take in the vast world.
Being raised in a culture which relies heavily on harmony, both within themselves, and with those around them, they often experience a culture shock to see a lack of harmony in the world outside of their home. They never fully understand this, and may try to teach harmony to those who they feel need it the most. This may result in an unintended insult, especially to a chaotic rogue.
Aso'Teran Names
The Aso'Terani name their children through the use of nature. Following the birth, the doula, or midwife will step out of the birthing tent with her eyes closed. When she opens them, the first thing she sees is used to give the child their name. Often these names are temporary as the children choose a name for themselves after their element manifests during their Kiahr'Kai. Some examples of these childhood names include:
Falling Rain
Crazy Fox
White Owl
Howling Wolf
Sitting Sparrow
Climbing Bear
Dancing Wolf
