Homebrew Collectable Monster Species Details

Gotta Catch Em All!

Collectable Monsters are a wide array of somewhat anime-esque creatures known for being companions to other races and for battling each other. Because of how varied they are, and how more are discovered all the time, some people take it upon themselves to catalogue every variety they come across and research them for their mysterious abilities.

Variety is the Spice of Life

Collectable Monsters encompass a wide range of physical traits. They can resemble beasts, plants, natural phenomena and even inanimate objects. The main thing tying each together is the clear ability to emote with facial features and communicate with potential partners.

Adapt and Overcome

The most notable feature of Collectable Monsters is their ability to grow stronger by suddenly transforming into a new type of Monster. This is called "evolution" and is usually triggered by gaining experience in combat. The first form all Monsters have, called Basis Level, is usually the size of a human child, but they can also be as tall or taller than a human adult. If one has evolved, they are almost always transformed into a larger form to represent their increased power.

From a World of Discovery

Collectable Monsters exist as a primary race of creature...in a world where they're the center of a game of combat and collection. They may have even began as a fictional game popularized by children. However, thanks to dark magic, a breach in dimensions, or elaborate technology, they are very much real.

Collectable Monster Names

The most common way to refer to a Monster is by their species name, especially if there are no other Monsters of their species in a group. Because of this, Monsters will often adopt a new, more fitting name after evolving. Species names are often puns or references to the other things they resemble and are not usually gendered.

However, Monsters can also adopt names and nicknames from peers and trainers, and often require them if in a group of their own kin. These names are more likely to carry over between evolutions.

Collectable Monster Species Names: Arborex, Bubonyx, Caliclover, Caneerie, Gargorge, Lupansy, Mustelink, Zebaura

Collectable Monster Traits

Collectable Monsters come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. However, some traits are shared between all species and individuals.

Evolution Ability Score Increase

You do not gain any Ability Score increases automatically. Instead, you Ability Scores can increase by choosing to evolve. This will give you 5 points to distribute to your stats; you cannot use more than 2 points on one ability score, and as per usual, the total score cannot be higher than 20.

Starting at 6th level, you gain the option to evolve your Monster. This will change the Monster's physical appearance and give you an Ability Score increase (applied after ability score increases based on class.)

Evolution can only occur a max of 2 times per Monster. To evolve, you must take the action immediately after gaining a level. It does not have to be at level 6; this is just when you gain access to the first evolution. The second time you get access to one is at level 13.

Monsters can only evolve one time upon reaching a new level. The effect of evolution is permanent.

Monster Element

Each Monster has an elemental damage type. This gives them resistance to two types of damage and determines the damage type of their Element Blast.

Flame: Blast does fire damage, resistant to fire and radiant

Frost: Blast does cold damage, resistant to cold and piercing

Storm: Blast does lightning damage, resistant to lightning and thunder

Toxic: Blast does Acid damage, resistant to acid and poison

Mind: Blast does psychic damage, resistant to psychic and force

Element Blast

This attack's damage type is determined by the Element chosen from the table. It is launched at one target and has a range of 100ft.

When using an Element Blast, the target must make a saving throw. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one (rounded down if a decimal.) The damage increases to 3d6 after first evolution and 4d6 after second evolution. You can use this attack 3 times in between long rests.

Age

The way Collectable Monsters are created is shrouded in mystery. As such, it can be hard to determine how old they are from a glance, especially since it doesn't always correlate with if a Monster has evolved. This is made harder by the fact that they're born with some level of intelligence and don't appear to age. All researchers have been able to determine is that they can mature quickly emotionally and mentally; a Monster only a few years old can be considered an adult.

Alignment

Monsters are typically Lawful and bound to certain rules that govern their existence. This is most easily seen in how they fight, but can also show up in social situations, such as eye contact being a form of aggression. Even villainous Monsters tend to adapt to these rules, and leaders are naturally turned to as a way to keep to this unspoken code.

Size

Basis-level Collectable Monsters are usually as small as a child. However, they can be larger, and as a general rule, evolved Monsters are Medium by default.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Languages

Most Collectable Monsters are sapient and can communicate with other races in Common through speech, writing, or other means. Besides that, they can communicate with each other in their own language, Moncode, which they instinctually understand from birth.
