Homebrew Two Kobolds in a "Trenchcoat" (2KTC) Species Details
Kobolds have a strong sense of community and the greater “good.” By this I mean they stick together to cause the most mischief for their own amusement as possible. You have taken this to a new extreme. You are a pair of kobolds who share a special bond of some kind. Perhaps you are a pair of mated kobolds, siblings, relatives, or just particularly close friends who have chosen to adventure together amongst the bigger folk.
You excel at teamwork with yourself and hardly have to speak or communicate at all to be on the same page. But however shall you blend in??? The big folk hate you little rascals with good reason. They would most likely kill you or run you off on sight. How can you walk among them undetected???
Easy.
You have stolen a coat off a clothesline and begun your long practiced acrobatics act. No one will ever be the wiser.
Two Kobolds in a "Trenchcoat" (2KTC) Traits
Two Man TeamTwo "Man" Team
When a creature speaks or otherwise interacts with you for the first time they must succeed a(n) Perception/ Investigation check against your passive Deception/ Sleight of hand skill or perceive you as either a dragonborn or lizardfolk (your choice). Further checks will be made when appropriate, similar to discovering an illusion.
While in disguise you count as a single creature for the purpose of taking damage, making any saving throws, or ability/ skill checks. When you are asleep you both sleep as one and gain the benefits of a long rest as a single character, but your disguise is not held. You may only attune to up to three items as normal.
As a bonus action you may choose to throw off your disguise and become two kobolds. Choose an adjacent 5 foot space for the second kobold to occupy. While separated in this way you have the following traits:
- Your current health pool is divided evenly between the two kobolds. Round down.
- They each use the same initiative and have the same speed.
- Each kobold has an action, a bonus action and a reaction.
- Class levels are split as you choose amongst the kobolds, but once you choose to give a level to a kobold it will always have that level. (They may never be more than two levels apart.)
Example: While combined you are Rogue 4, Fighter 2. When you split, you may choose to become, A {rogue 3} and a {Rogue 1, Fighter 2}, or any combination of those levels. But then those levels stay with those kobolds, and you cannot change them the next time you split. Write them down. On level up, choose which of the two kobolds gains the level. While level one you split into one level one character and an unleveled DMG Kobold, but with a split health pool.
- Any conditions present when the split happens are carried over to both creatures.
- Each kobold retains the same base attributes, skill proficiencies, and racial traits as the combined entity.
- When taking damage or making saving throws the kobolds make them individually.
- Choose which of your attuned magic items go with which kobold when they split.
For an action and half your movement you can recombine, adding your health pool back together, becoming one creature, and reassuming your disguise.
Ability Scores
Your Dexterity increases by 1, your wisdom by 1, and on score of your choice by 1.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write common and draconic.
Circus Act
You have proficiency in acrobatics.
Pack Tactics
When you are attacking a creature and that creature is within 5 feet of an ally you have advantage on the attack.
Age
You reach adulthood at 6 years old and can live to be 120.
Size
You are Medium while one creature and Small while two creatures.
Speed
You have a 30ft base walking speed.

Posted Mar 31, 2021This is a beautiful and hilarious concept that I think I actually wanna run in one of my games, I'm just concerned with some of the logistics. I have some questions about certain situations that may come up in combat that are a little confusing:
1: Does concentration on higher level spells maintain after you split? For example: A level 12 wizard 2KTC is concentrating on telekinesis, a fifth level spell, and then they use their bonus action to split into two level six kobold wizards. Neither of them are a high enough level to actually cast that spell, so does the spell fade away?
2: If after the two are split and one of them falls unconscious, but the other stays up, can the one still standing use their action to recombine? It says here that the health pool is added back together, but does that apply for when one is unconscious or dead?
3: Could another character us their action to remove the trench coat, thus forcing them to split in two? Or perhaps the opposite, can someone else force them together?
4: What if while combined, the character is at 1 hit point? Would splitting up instantly kill one the kobolds? Logically speaking, at one HP one of the kobolds has to be unconscious even before you split.

Posted Apr 16, 2021I feel like this would be easier without the 2 players, 2 different levels concept, but I'll ignore it if I use it. Either way, I like it!

Posted May 6, 2021This is a very unique race as it is two separate creatures acting as one. However, ThePotatoDude in an earlier text pointed out many things wrong with this race, such as spells fading away after slitting into two kobolds, other creatures removing the trench coat, and so on.
Sure, the concept is funny, but when it comes to D&D, if you want to bring a concept to life, you have to take your time and apply all of the necessities. I highly recommend that the creator go back and redo this race, since there are currently many flaws that need to be addressed.
Once the race is a hundred percent functional, I do believe that it would make a great character, because playing as two creatures as once is a very cool concept for me. Right now, though, this race (in my opinion) is not that great and requires lots of modifying. The important thing to remember though is that this is D&D, and the whole point is to just have fun.
Please check out my many homebrews: Ornithor (race), Ring of Death (magic item), Druidic Enhancement (spell), and many more!
