Homebrew Bone Genasi Species Details
You were born a normal genasi (probably), but later in life you found yourself partially turned into a bone devil. Through experimentation, contract, or other means, you are now considered both bone devil and genasi. Your appearance proves to be the biggest change. Your spine thickened and expanded, partially sticking out your back and trailing down and extends from your lower back, it forms a long poisonous tail. Your skin is pulled slightly tighter, and you find that along the base of your neck, new bones have extended 2 inches out and curve towards your head. Your hands have thinned and lengthened by an inch. The bones in your legs and feet have stretched and contorted forming into a digitigrade anatomy forcing you to walk on your digets instead of the soles of your feet. Your skin color stays the same color but your eyes now seem to slightly glow. As you become stronger, you find that there are other changes happening to your body.
Bone Genasi Traits
Your bone genasi character has some characteristics in common genasi and some with bone devils.Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common, Primordial, and Infernal.
Devil Senses
You've gained the senses of a bone devil. You have darkvision and telepathy, both up to 120 ft.
Ability Score Increase
Between your Genasi blood and the cursed Bone Devil blood, your Strength and Constitution scores increase by +2.
Age
Genasi mature at about the same rate as humans and reach adulthood in their late teens. They live somewhat longer than humans do, up to 120 years.
Bone Devils on the other hand do not age. Whatever age you were cursed is the age you remain.
Alignment
Independent and self-reliant, genasi tended toward a neutral alignment. But you find that your new form pulls you towards an Evil alignment.
Size
Though the bone devil blood chaged other aspects, it seemed to leave your hight alone. Genasi are as varied as their mortal parents but are generally built like humans, standing anywhere from 5 feet to over 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Bone Devil Mutations
As you get stronger, you notice various changes happening to your body.
| Mutations | Effect |
|---|---|
| Poisonous Tail and Retracted Appearance |
At first level you gain the use of your new poisonous tail. Your tail does 1d4 piercing damage and 1d4 poison damage (+1d4 each at 6,10,14 and 18th level). You also learn how to hide your new devilish appearance. As you concentrate, your bone features retract back into your body leaving scars where they emerged. Taking damage or doing anything that causes you to loose concentration will result in a DC 15 Constitution save. If you loose concentration the features re-emerge. |
| Partial Immunities | At 7th level you form a slight layer of alpha-keratin under your skin that protects against blades. Your body also has built a defense against poison. You are now immune to slashing and poison damage. |
| Beginners Wings | At 9th level, Your body has undergone yet another surprising transformation. Between your spine has emerged large, collapsible, slightly transparent, insect like wings. Though they are hard to use, you can manage to fly 10ft every 6 seconds. |
| Natural Flight | At 12th level, Your body has gotten use to your new wings. While they cant carry you as fast as your legs, they can manage to get a 25ft every 6 seconds. |

Posted Apr 9, 2020This is cool, but it seems kinda OP, especially with the immunities. I would change the immunities to resistances, and give it the Chill Touch cantrip at 1st level and the first level spell Inflict Wounds at 3rd level (once per long rest), similar to how the official Genasi work.

Posted Oct 17, 2021Having the tail attack as a 10ft bonus action that does 2d4 damage seems very overpowered, as it's stronger than any two weapon fighting, or equivalent to a monks flurry of blows, which costs resources. The increase to a 10d4 bonus action over the course of the game also seems to be wildly overpowered to me. I'd reccomend toning that down a bit.
Two +2s to stats also seems excessive, as the vast majority of races only give +1 and +2 or equivalent. Hill dwarves are the only other ones to get that, and that is because their subrace trait, Dwarven Heavy Armor, is completely useless to the types of characters that the stat bonuses lean into (clerics, paladins, fighters)
As helmut said, the immunities are OP. Poison immunity isn't too bad, since that's relatively common, but if they're made of bone, perhaps give them vulnerability to bludgeoning damage to even out the immunity to slashing, or lower the immunity to resistance.
The wording for the flight ability is strange. In effect it gives them a flight speed of 10ft at level 9, and 25ft at level 12. The way its worded points this out, but in a roundabout way by saying every 6 seconds, which is a round anyway.
Overall an interesting idea for a race, but hampered by being designed in a way that makes it far too powerful.
