Homebrew Time Lord Species Details
“There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea’s asleep, and the rivers dream. People made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there’s danger, somewhere there’s injustice, and somewhere else the tea’s getting cold. Come on, now. We’ve got work to do.”
— The Doctor
The Time Lords are considered one of the oldest and most technologically powerful races in the universe. They were created from years and years of exposure to the Untempered Schism, a gap in the fabric of reality that looks into the time vortex. They were thought to be an extinct race, but a good few still survive in the hidden places in the universe.
Hidden Travelers
Time Lords were sworn never to interfere with the flow of time, only to watch. However, a few leave their home and decide to change time. These Time Lords are known as Renegades, and are considered to be criminals in the eyes of the other Time Lords.
Physical Attributes
Time Lords and human beings look alike, however they differ in many respects. Physiological differences from humans include two hearts which normally beat at 170 beats per minute, an internal body temperature of 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit) and a "respiratory bypass system" that allows them to survive strangulation. Time Lords also have an increased resilience to higher frequencies of sound. If severely injured, they can go into a healing coma which lowers their body temperature to below freezing. Radiation given off by X-rays pose no real threat to Time Lords, and they can absorb an amount that would be lethal to a human before expelling it.
Time Lords are also extremely long-lived, routinely counting their ages in terms of centuries; they could live "practically forever, barring accidents." They consider an age of 750 years to be "middle-aged", and a "kid" to be 90 years old. However, within a specific incarnation, a Time Lord is able to age, albeit much more slowly than a human.
Regeneration
Time Lords also have the ability to regenerate their bodies when their current body is mortally wounded. This process results in their body undergoing a transformation, gaining a new physical form and a new personality; a Time Lord who was pleasant and polite in his previous regeneration might express surprise when his new form turns out to be prone to saying rude things. Time Lords can switch genders upon their regenerations, and can regenerate twelve times (thirteen incarnations in all). However, a Time Lord can die before they have a chance to regenerate, in which case they die outright.
Time Lord Transportation
A Time Lord often has a link to a TARDIS, or Time And Relative Dimensions In Space. TARDISes are characterised not just by their ability to travel in time, but also their dimensionally transcendent nature. A TARDISes interior spaces exist in a different dimension from its exterior, allowing it to appear to be bigger on the inside. The TARDIS also has a chameleon circuit, which lets it change its appearance to blend in with its surroundings. Sometimes this can be broken, making it stay in one form.
As part of fleshing out a Time Lord character, consider the nature of that character’s TARDIS. The TARDIS Guide tables offer names and appearances that you can use to flesh out your character’s TARDIS.
