Homebrew Vull Changeling Species Details

Changelings can shift their forms with a thought. Many changelings use this gift as a form of artistic and emotional expression. It’s also an invaluable tool for grifters, spies, and others who wish to deceive. This leads many people to treat changelings with suspicion.

A Hidden People

Vull changelings usually reside alongside normal changelings or in community cave systems.

Vull changelings are born to one of two paths. A few are raised in communities where changelings are true to their nature and deal openly with the people around them. Some are raised by other races, who find their way in the world without ever knowing another like themselves.

Vull Changelings are not born as legacies or other changelings, as they are infertile. Instead, they can be born from any other race, in place of a normal child.

Forms

In their true form, changelings take on the appearance of a legacy of their parent race. For instance, a human changeling will look like a normal human. It is uncommon to see a changeling in their true form, for a typical changeling changes their shape the way others might change clothes. Changelings can take on the shape of another being, with their new body being called a form. The changeling can also store multiple forms, although each changeling has different limits to this. Some limits are physical, like a wound or broken limbs, or they might be mental, like a mental block or a complex of some kind. Some limits are also imposed via magic, most commonly on changeling children so as to keep them safe.

If a changeling is hurt in their true form, or alternative true form, that damage is present in every other forms that changeling takes. Scars and wounds are common among a changelings' many forms. In a changeling's alternative true form, they suffer from the same consequences of the original true form, just without the form itself.

Changeling Names

The name of a changeling tends to be one of their parent race. For example, a human changeling (a changeling who was born to humans) would take on a human name.

Changelings have a fluid relationship with gender, seeing it as one characteristic to change among many.

Vull Changeling Traits

Your changeling character has the following traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Charisma score increases by 2. In addition, one other ability score of your choice increases by 1.

Age

Vull changelings mature much slower than humans, reaching physical maturity around 50 years old. They have a much longer lifespan—usually around 300 years, although some Vulls have lived for a thousand years with major modifications to their bodies. While a changeling can transform to conceal their age, the effects of aging affect them somewhat similarly to humans.

Alignment

Changelings tend toward pragmatic neutrality, and few changelings embrace evil.

Size

Your size is Medium. To set your height and weight randomly, start with rolling a size modifier:

Size modifier = 2d4

Height = 5 feet + 1 inch + your size modifier in inches

Weight in pounds = 115 + (2d4 × your size modifier)

Otherwise, use the sizing rules of your parent race.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Shapechanger

As an action, you can form into any creature of your size ±1 that you have seen or know enough about the functions of (from reading), or back into your true form (or alternative true form). Clothes and specific items change with you. However, extra equipment does not change. Any damage sustained in the true forms persists in all forms. If you die, you revert to your true form.

You stay in the new form until you use an action to revert to your true form or until you die.

Changeling Instincts

You gain proficiency with two of the following skills of your choice: DeceptionSurvival, Intimidation, and Persuasion.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and two other languages of your choice.

Temperature Vulnerability

A Vull must be within the ideal temperature range of 45F -- 75F.

If they become too hot, their body will begin to melt like wax. If they are too cold, then they will lose chunks of bone, muscle, skin, and blood. Any lost body mass can be reattached once the Vull is back within the ideal temperature range.
