Homebrew Aaravita Species Details
Aaravita are passive plant creatures. They are composed of vines and twigs wound together to create a malleable human shape. This form and the plant species varies significantly from Aaravita to Aaravita. However, this form is not permanent. Whenever a Aaravita is unconscious, whether sleeping or at 0 health, they transform into a potted plant looking exactly like a typical specimen of their parent species. They can also transform at will. This plant is identifiable as the Aaravita only to those who have seen the transformation, use a spell to identify the plant, or beat a Perception DC of 15 plus the Aaravita's proficiency bonus. If the Aarvita takes any damage while in plant form, they may use their action to transform back into their humanoid shape. While a potted plant they have no sensory input other than a vague sense of the natural environment. They cannot hear or communicate with anything other than plants. The message spell/ cantrip does still work on them while in plant form.
Aaravita are created when a dryad wishes to become mobile, or when another similar creature enters this plane. They often have 1-3 close friends who they would sacrifice anything for. These friends protect and care for them while they are in their plant state. They tend to prefer witches, wizards, and druids for this purpose, and these groupings are called guardian pairs.
An Aaravita forming is a singular event, so there is no real Aaravita society outside of the close and caring relationships Aaravitae have with other plants. When grouped together, Aaravitae tend to get along well, and even act snooty towards non-plant creatures. In addition, Aaravita/Aaravita guardian pairs, while uncommon, do exist, and can be very lethal.
Aaravita Traits
Aaravita have many special planty abilities, both in and out of combatSending
The Aaravita can cast the spell Sending as a cantrip while in humanoid form, and 3 times per long rest while in potted plant form.
Plantly Figure
Due to the cumbersome nature of wearing armor as a plant and as a potted plant, an Aaravita can never become proficient in armor
Plantly Limitations
Due to their size shifting nature, an Aaravita doesn't have much magical room for additional items. They can only attune to one thing at a time.
Plantly Fighting
An Aaravita can transform any appendages into a club (1 appendage needed) or greatclub (2 appendages needed), with the stats used as normal club or greatclub. (An Aaravita has 2 appendages total)
Planten Shield
On their turn, an Aaravita can use an appendage to create a tough bark shield. The shield costs a full action to form and to deform, but increases the shielded party's AC by 2. The Aaravita can shield itself or another creature in melee range. If they shield another creature and the shield was needed to deflect the blow, the Aaravita takes a d2 of damage. (An Aaravita has 2 appendages total)
Potted Plant
While unconscious or at will, an Aaravita transforms into a potted plant looking exactly like a typical specimen of their parent species. Often, an Aaravita's pot doubles as a hat while it is humanoid.
Nature's Resistance
An Aaravita is resistant to all forms of elemental damage except fire. They are vulnerable to fire and cold damage, and immune to slashing damage unless the slashing damage is a critical hit.
Species Bonus
The player of an Aaravita may take one trait from the plant species they are using as the base for this character, and insert it here. (ex: a poison spell, increased charisma, supernatural perfume, go wild!)
Plant Sense
Using this passive ability similar to a bat's sonar, an Aaravita can project small tendrils into the ground that allow it to gain a shadowy understanding of the surrounding terrain for up to 60 ft. It will be able to locate things in a room or area, but be unsure of their color or other specific details. If the ground is too hard to put the tendrils into, or the Aaravita is inside a building with a wooden or otherwise unnatural floor, this vision is reduced to 15 ft. Stacking the Plant Brethren ability onto this ability grants an extra 15 ft of vision.
Plant Brethren
For each friendly plant within 30 ft of the Aaravita, the Aaravita can add 1d4 to any ability check or attack roll. The total plant number can be no more than the Aaravita's Charisma modifier. A potted plant Aaravita counts as a plant for this bonus action, but a formed Aaravita does not count. This ability can be stacked onto Plant Sense to add an extra 15ft of vision.

Posted Aug 30, 2022This is a very cute and funny race. This reminds me a little bit of Groot and Poison Ivy. I'm so excited to get a chance to play this race. ^^ Thank you so much for making this.
