Homebrew Solios - Children of the Sun Species Details
The Solios bear within their souls the strength of the sun itself. They are a peaceful and jovial people, as they are driven more by emotion than reason. They are raised to love passionately like an intense flame, but if you manage to surface the anger of a Solios, their ferocity is deadly like the burning sun.
People of the Sun
The Solios resemble humans at a glance, with unusual features that are tied to their connection to the sun. They are often taller than most humans and can have both lean and muscular builds. Solios skin tones and hair are rich in gold or orange undertones. Because of this, their skin will be deep colors of bronze, orange, honey, gold, brown, or black. Their hair often comes in rich and warm deep shades of golds, reds, auburns, and blacks. The Solios are known for their exotic beauty, often having naturally thick and long hair ranging in textures from wavy to thick curls. They have little to no body hair and some males are able to grow out thick and long beards. Many Solios will grow out their hair on their head to great lengths. Their eyes appear to be one solid color-in rich golden or yellow tones- but their sclera, iris, and pupils can be seen when examined up close. Due to the Solios's emotional nature, when focusing on a task or feeling strong emotions, their eyes may glow like molten gold and the ends of their hair may writhe and glow like fire.
Solios are tied to the sun and they can absorb its rays, granting them long and healthy lives as well as giving them the ability to fly. They learn to fly from a young age and this ability comes as easy to them as feeling happy or breathing. Often while flying, the ends of their hair will leave a fiery contrail, making it appear even longer than it actually is. Because of these exotic traits, a Solios may be confused for a fire genasi to those unaware of their existence. Months, or even years, of sunlight deprivation causes Solios to weaken and die much quicker than their natural age. To avoid this, Solios will stay away from places of extreme darkness such as the Underdark.
Hidden in Sunlight
The origins of the Solios are unknown. Many outside of the Solios assume that they have close ties to the human or elven gods of the sun. Others believe that they came from the elemental plane of fire and have a distant relationship to the efreet or fire genasi, due to their comparable features and extreme levels of emotion. The only known records of their origins are untraceable documents of an exotic and ferocious people of the sun who sought sanctuary from another world, thousands of years before. Solios place no importance on their people's origins as they often prioritize a hedonistic culture and lifestyle.
Burning Passion
The Solios are a peaceful race that are driven by their emotions. While they are unusually fierce warriors, their capacity for love is even greater than their capacity for hate; as a result of this, war and strife between other Solios is incredibly rare and they do well with maintaining peace among other creatures and communities. Due to their exotic nature, some see the Solios as prize possessions, like trophies of beauty and strength. Some seek the hidden connection that ties the Solios to the sun through the means of unholy ritual or magic. Others may use them in colosseum fighting, exposing them to enough sunlight to give them a means to survive. Their enemies may try to infiltrate their cities, as the Solios are quite welcoming to peaceful strangers and they are most hospitable to those that stumble upon their lands. However, to betray the kindness of a Solios and underestimate them as weak can be a great risk as a Solios scorned can be quite deadly and relentless.
Solios relationships or partnerships are often unconventional. A Solios may fall in love with one individual and hold onto that love for the rest of their lives, while seeking physical or carnal desires with others casually. Solios do not have a single word in their language that is equivalent to the word, "love"; they cannot restrict a word like this to one definition. Their passion and desire to express their love is shown through their relationships, friendships, themselves, and the things around them. To win the heart of a Solios, is to achieve a true life-long love.
Solios skills for battle are maintained largely for ceremonial sake. The strategy behind Solios combat is a keen sense of self-worth, compassion, and benevolence. The common weakness of a Solios is pushing their emotions too far by endangering their loved ones. They could become reckless and dangerous, only seeking out their enemy, never knowing when to stop until methods of intervention or incapacitation are used against them. A Solios raised outside of their communities or that is unaware of their people's emotional nature may struggle with the intensity of their feelings, often being a danger to others as their capacity for both love and fury is equally great.
Life of Paradise
Due to the their natural connection to the sun, Solios communities and cities often reside in places of extreme heat and open air. They favor tropical areas that have a variety of colorful plant life and diverse wildlife. Other Solios communities can be found in other extremely hot places such as deserts or the elemental plane of fire. They prefer buildings that are tall with many large openings for access on foot and flight. Structures built by the Solios do not blend in with the natural geography of the land and reflect their passion by making each one appear like individual temples. Solios are known to brighten and accentuate preexisting buildings in communities they migrate to, often complimenting them with chromatic or metallic colors and designs. Solios clothing, much like the rest of their culture, is flamboyant, flowing, and colorful. They tend to wear very little clothing compared to other races, both as a reflection of their uninhibited culture and to have maximum exposure to the sun as a means of magically converting sunlight into their ability to fly. You'll often find the Solios to wear colorful open robes, dresses, and garments accessorizing with golden jewelry. For battle and ceremony, traditionally a Solios may uniform themselves with colorful light armor that exposes parts of their arms, legs, and torsos that fit tightly against their bodies to avoid issues in flight.
To avoid instances of extreme rage and danger, some Solios may not take up a life of adventure if they're settled in a place happily. Because of the ceremonial battle teachings that most Solios are raised into, it is not uncommon to find Solios as members of monasteries that follow and teach the practices of the Sun Soul. Solios that seek purpose in combat may channel their fury and rage as fighters or succumb to their emotions as barbarians. This can be financially beneficial to their people or themselves. Many Solios do not revere the teachings of magic like other cultures and races do as they do not seek to control or change the elements around them; they admire the beauty of the world as it is and to control or bend it feels less inspiring to them. Some Solios may find it dishonorable, confusing, or only interesting to observe. Because of this, Solios do not build schools of magical studies but they'll allow others outside of their communities to establish these places, as long as they do not bring harm to others.
Many Solios do not revere the sun as a god to worship, as much as they see it as a celestial body that they idolize and respect. Their philosophies and cultural practices stem entirely around the emotions and expressions they have when basking in the sun's warm and comforting rays, seeing its light give life to all, and finding similarity in its hot glow with their own innate burning passions. Because of these strong feelings commonly found among Solios communities and cities, clerics and paladins who worship deities of the sun are attracted to Solios and their communities. Solios allow worshippers of sun deities to settle or find refuge in their cities, as long as it does not impede on others.
Because of the amount of people and diversity of those who seek and travel through Solios cities or communities, some Solios may feel inspired to take a life of adventure. Witnessing the passion of a tale or song, the gospels of a solar deity, the whimsical curiosity of a mage's ability, or the strength of a foreign warrior is all it could take to send a Solios off into the world.
Solios Names
Traditional Solios names are rarely linked to their own gender or sex. Solios see females and males as equal in all things, and they find societies with roles and relationships purposely divided by gender to be puzzling. A Solios is given one name that is usually up to three syllables long. The last letter of a Solios name is separated by an apostrophe and can be used as a pause in its pronunciation of the name, or it can be pronounced as a whole. A Solios will often respond to either, depending on their preference. i.e. A Solios named, Kitt'n may be pronounced as "Keet Ehn" or "Kitten" or Ryand'r may be pronounced "Rye-Ahnd Ahr" or "Rye-ander". This letter resembles a family or community that a Solios was born into or that their family is apart of. It is never silent and it is considered rude for outsiders or strangers to refer to a Solios as only part of their name.
