Homebrew Breton Species Details

The Bretons, like much of the humans, originated from Atmora. Unlike said humans, however, the Breton bloodline has some elven ancestry. When Ysgramor and his sons came to Tamriel, they founded the great city of Saarthal. On the Night of the Tears, the Snow Elves (who previously had an alliance with the new Nords/Humans) sacked and burned the great city. During the attack, the elves took many slaves; some took them west to High Rock and others took them south. Eventually, the humans bred with elves, and this is what created the race of Bretons.

Ancestry

Bretons are the elven hybrids of Nedic and Aldmeri ancestry. Because of this, Bretons physiologically appear similar to human races. Their magical talents find explanation in their mer blood.

Professions

Excelling magically, Bretons make excellent mages and easily escalate through the ranks of the Mages Guild and Arcane University. Several of the guild's highest ranks, including Arch-Mage, Master-Wizard, and Wizard are held, mostly, by Bretons. Eloquent and linguistic by nature, Bretons also make excellent merchants, using their magical expertise to open shops that sell magical wares. The Gilded Carafe, run by Claudette Perrick, is an example of this.

Breton Traits

Your Breton character's traits are influenced both by the touch of Elven blood in their ancestry and their culmination of magic prowess throughout the ages.

Ability Score Increase

Your Wisdom score increases by 2 and your Intelligence score increases by 1.

Age

Bretons reach adulthood in their late teens and live less than a century.

Alignment

Bretons have, in some cases, been regarded as a barbaric race, involving themselves in armed uprisings and political skirmishes historically. Bretons have a tendency to think quite highly of themselves and, often, more lowly of others, acting of their own volitions before much else. Bretons have a tendency toward Chaotic alignments.

Size

Bretons vary fairly widely in height and build, from barely 5 feet to well over 6 feet tall. They tend toward the leaner and shorter side due to their Altmeri blood, but can fall anywhere. Regardless of your position in that range, your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

Thanks to your elf blood, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Arcane Mastery

You have proficiency in the arcana skill.

Highborn

You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

Dragonskin

Due to your ancestors' experimentation with magic, you have the uncanny ability to resist magic at will. On your turn, you can use a bonus action to gain a resistance to all magical damage until the start of your next turn. Once you have used this ability, you cannot use it again until you have completed a long rest.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Tamrielic, Altmeri, and one extra language of your choice.

Race Spells

Every person, depending on their race, has the ability to cast a small handful of spells on command. You can cast the cantrip produce flame, the 1st-level spell find familiar, and the 1st-level spell cure wounds at will. These three spells do not count toward your prepared spells or spells known list and do not consume spell slots when used. The spells cannot be cast at higher levels using this power. Once you have used a spell once, you cannot use it again until you have completed a long rest.

Use your Intelligence modifier when casting each of these spells, even if you are a magic user whose spellcasting ability is not Intelligence. Your Spell Save DC and Spell Attack modifier are as follows:

Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + Intelligence modifier

Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier
