Homebrew Bakeneko Species Details

Bakeneko is an extremely rare cat-shifter race that feeds off of the luck of other creatures. Modern-day Bakeneko are usually stuck in their human form as many have lost their ability to shift. This race was created by gods to transport luck from one mortal to another. Eventually, Bakenekos decided to live for themselves, but in that process became indistinguishable from humans. This race has an affinity for gambling and other luck-based professions as Bakenekos can still manipulate luck to their advantage.

Bakeneko Traits

Your Bakeneko character has the following racial traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Intelligence score increases by 1, and your Charisma score increases by 2.

Luck Steal/Give

Bakenekos, by physical touch, have minor control over the mysterious power known as luck. They can take away another creature's existing luck or give luck from their own reservoir.

Each object, magic item, and NPC has an innate amount of luck replenished each day at dawn. Each object has 1 unit of luck, each magical item has 2-3 units of luck (determined by the DM), and each NPC has 4 units of luck. As an action, you can steal from an object, magic item, or NPC to gain units of luck. Whenever you choose to steal luck from a creature, they must make a saving throw (DC is equal to 8 + your proficiency modifier + your charisma bonus). If the creature fails, you steal 2 units of luck; if it succeeds, you steal 1 unit of luck. A Bakeneko can hold up to 7 units of luck in their reserves.

Whenever a creature you can see within 30 ft. of you makes an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw. You can use your reaction to steal luck the same way you would as stated above. If you steal luck from a creature in this way, that creature's roll is lowered by the amount of luck that you stole from it.

In addition, you can grant luck to creatures that you see within 30 ft. of you, you can use your action or reaction to fill a creature of your choice with your luck. Whenever that creature makes an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you can spend 1 or 2 unit(s) of luck to grant a +1 or +2 bonus to that creature's roll. This luck lasts within them for 1 round, dissipating if the luck is not used.

Whenever a new dawn happens, your luck reservoir resets to 0.

Darkvision

Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Sylvan.

Fey

Your creature type is fey, rather than humanoid.

Size

You are Medium. If someone were to sense you without looking at you, they would assume that it is a small creature, like a cat.

Speed

Your walking speed is 30 feet.
