Homebrew Bovidaen(Updated) Species Details
I’d never given it much thought looking back. Perhaps I should have. My younger brother’s best friend and one of my friends both shared traits I’d never seen before, yet I wrote them off as anomalies. Tubbo and Schlatt both had droopy ears, ram’s horns, and curly hair like a sheep’s wool. Eret is telling me of one he knows, Cara, Captain of a crew of pirates, yet, Puffy, as she is affectionately know, fights with honor.
I regret not looking into and researching the subject further. When I questioned Tubbo, all he could give me was the name given to them: Bovidaens, and where they came from. Apparently they came from green pastures on the edge of the Feywilds, a dangerous place full of forgotten magic. How they came to be I do not know. However, I can’t look into it now. We have a revolution to plan.
—Wilbur Soot, Leader of the L’Manburgian Revolution
As Bovidae are as much of the wild as they are of humanity, living alone doesn’t bother them. Sometimes family groups may from and flock together for a while, but stubbornness is a trait of Rams, and many Bovidae disagree causing stalemates in large groups. This leads many to try and live alone or with humans.
A Quaint Folk
Few and far between you will find the Bovidaens, or Bovidae as the plural form is. These humanoids share much with humans, including culture, clothing style, lifestyle, cuisine, and other things. Generally mild mannered, these folk follow paths similar to half-elves as they are neither human, nor wild, but something in between, not fully accepted by either one. Bovidae can range anywhere between five and six-and-a-half foot tall, and weigh vastly different amounts as well. What differentiates them from humans are their features. All have curly hair, reminiscent of a sheep’s wool, horns, which fully grow in around age twenty, sharpened facial features, such as a firmer jawline or a smaller nose, and it has been said that they may have hooves as well. They can live up to 120 years old.
Rarity Causes Misinformation
Bovidae are strong and determined workers. Set them to a task and they will see it through eventually. Whether it takes them mere hours or many years, you can count on Bovidae to complete a mission. Bovidaens are often honor bound, declaring those who break oaths or change sides traitors. They will even condemn their own kind if the crime is sever enough. Little to none is known about the origins of Bovidae. Not even Bovidae themselves know how they came to be. Only the Feywild forests hold the mysteries of the origins of the Bovidae.
Bovidaen(Updated) Traits
While similar to humans, Bovidae have some traits unique to them.Hooves
When attacking, you can kick you opponent with a follow up attack(functions like a bonus action, but instead of a turn it takes place at the end of an attack) to do 1d12 bludgeoning damage. However you must roll with disadvantage, and if you miss, your opponent gets advantage on the next attack made against you, as missing the kick made you stumble forward and lose your balance. Target must succeed a Dexterity saving throw of 13 or higher
Natural Order
After kicking an enemy with your hooves, you can use a bonus attack to chain together a range of attacks. If you miss the second attack, note the penalties section.
Kick — slash: you must succeed a 14+(Dex) with disadvantage to land the kick. If you land it, target takes normal damage, and you must make a throw of 8+(Dex) with disadvantage to land the slashing attack dealing an extra 1d6 or 1d8(8–11= 1d8+ 1d6, 12+= 1d8+1d8)slashing damage. If slash attack fails there is no penalty.
Kick — head-butt: must succeed a 14+(Dex) to land kick. If landed, target takes normal damage for the Hooves trait, and player must make a 7+(Dex)with advantage to land the Ram’s Charge from the kick. If landed, target takes 1d12 bludgeoning damage+1d4 force damage+ your strength modifier. If head-butt is missed, you stumble forward giving your target advantage on it’s next attack against you.
Kick — slash — head-butt: Must succeed a 14+(Dex) with disadvantage to land the Hooves Feature(normal damage). If the attack lands, make an 10+(Dex) with disadvantage throw to determine whether you land the slash or not. If landed, target takes 1d6 or 1d8(10-15=1d6, 16+=1d8) slashing damage. If failed, you are unable to roll for the Ram’s charge ability and combo ends. After succeeding the Hooves and slash attacks, you may roll with advantage for a 7+(Dex) to land the Ram’s Charge ability. If landed, target takes 1d8 bludgeoning damage+1d6 force damage+ your strength modifier, and is stunned for two rounds if they fail the save. Saving throws apply to Ram’s Charge as normal. If you fail an attack roll at any point in the combo, the chain ends. Penalties apply wherever you fail your roll.
Slash — Ram’s Charge: After making a melee attack, you can choose to roll a 11+(Dex) to land a Ram’s Charge on the opponent. Normal Ram’s Charge statistics apply. If you fail Ram’s Charge, you stumble forward, giving your opponent advantage on their next attack against you.
Ram’s Charge
If your Bovidaen is older than twenty, you can use the Ram’s Charge as a bonus action on any turn to deal damage. You charge a maximum of fifteen feet before head-butting your opponent, dealing 1d8 bludgeoning damage+1d4 force damage, as well a stunning the opponent. This can be a first attack, or a follow up attack after swinging a hand-held weapon.
Roll 12 and up for attack to hit. Target must make a dex or con saving throw of 13 or above if attack succeeds. If they succeed the constitution saving throw, they take no damage but are stunned. If they succeed the dexterity saving throw, they aren’t stunned, but take the damage. After succeeding on one of the saving throws, the target can attempt the other saving throw. If they succeed the second, the damage is halved and they are stunned. If they fail the second, the first saving throw automatically fails, and they take damage and are stunned as if they hadn’t made the saving throw in the first place.
