Homebrew Aflura Species Details

Aflura are plant-based humanoids, natives of the Feywild that only recently found their way to the Material Plane. Being roughly the size of humans, their body tones range in hues from creamy whites to deep indigo, from pale pinks to dark emeralds, and color in between. Their flesh has a light springiness to it, like that of a flower petal, while rougher growths of bark, waxy leaves, and tufts of moss cover their bodies. They eschew normal clothing, since their bodies only superficially resemble that of most other races, instead encouraging their natural growths to take various shapes and lengths to imitate such garments (although these growths are no substitute for actual armor in combat. Their eyes lack irises, instead looking like glassy orbs of ebony. Each Aflura is born into the world from a great flower bud, itself spontaneously sprouting at the whims of Fey magics. They typically exhibit traits similar to those of the natural flora in the area, especially taking on personalities affected by the seasons.


Aflura are naturally curious beings, being born as adults but having little to no knowledge of the world around them save how to best ensure their own survival. As such, they often spend their first months or even years exploring only close to their place of birth, often a deep forest glade or other secluded area with untouched plant life. Once they feel comfortable enough, they will slowly strike out into the world, eager to experience the wider world. An Aflura that encounters someone or something that they enjoy will often settle in the area, for long periods, absorbing all they can before setting off again. In times of danger, they can prove hearty beings, stubborn as weeds and dangerous foes.

Racial Traits

AGE
Aflura have exceedingly long lives in the Feywild, with some living upwards of 1000 years old, however those in the natural world have yet to exist that long, so whether that holds true there is not yet known.

ALIGNMENT
Being creatures of both the natural world and the Feywild, Aflura tend toward Chaos and Neutrality. While they may pick up the good or evil moral tendencies of those they encounter during their lives, their inborn desire to explore and experience new things rarely allows for the rigid lifestyle of Lawfulness.

SIZE
Aflura range between just over 4 feet tall, to just over 6 feet, and are Medium size.

SPEED
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

LANGUAGES
You can speak, read, and write in Sylvan, plus one additional language of your choice.

 

 

Born of Fey and Flora

Aflura do not sleep or breathe, but do need to eat. Aflora eat by rooting themselves in place and absorbing light from the sun or moon, as well as nutrients from the soil. Doing so takes 4 hours, during which they enter a trance-like state. 

Any time an Aflura chooses to instead absorb nutrients and light for a full 8 hours instead of 4, they may choose one of two additional abilities: Overabsorption of sunlight causes latent bioluminescent cells in their bodies to become energized, and they may cast Light on themselves once, after which the extra reserves of sunlight are spent, OR, they may condense the extra stores of nutrients they absorbed and produce a single flower, whose nectar may be sprinkled on an ally to replicate the Spare the Dying spell. Only one ability may be chosen per long rest, and they must complete a full 8 hour long rest before choosing again.

Petal-tongued

Your magical heritage allows you to converse with plant life. You may cast Speak with Plants as a spell-like ability, but only to converse with plants or plant creatures; you do not gain the ability to grant plants animation nor can you verbally control the vines summoned by an entangle spell. This limitation only pertains to this ability; when you cast the spell normally, it grants its full effects. This ability may be used once per long rest.

Aflura born during different seasons gain variant traits. Blossom of Spring, Blossom of Summer, Blossom of Autumn, and Blossum of Winter are all displayed below, and must be chosen at first level and cannot be changed later.

Blossom of Spring
Those Aflura born in spring are filled with the energy and vibrancy of life, and seek to use that energy to their fullest!

You gain proficiency in the Performance skill and with one instrument of your choice.

Blossom of Summer
Aflura born in summer have a fire in their bellies, seeking enrichment in life through competition and dominance!

ABILITY SCORE INCREASE
Your Strength score increases by 1.

ACCEPTING ALL CHALLENGERS!
You gain proficiency in the Athletics skill and with one martial weapon of your choice.

Blossom of Autumn
Aflura born in the autumn are introspective and knowledgeable, studiously taking in all they can.

ABILITY SCORE INCREASE
Your Intelligence score increases by 1.

FRESH SCHOLARS
You gain proficiency in one of your choice of the Arcana, History, Nature, or Religion skills.

Blossom of Winter
An Aflura born in the cold of winter are hardy and self-reliant, used to taking care of themselves.

ABILITY SCORE INCREASE
Your Constitution score increases by 1.

STUBBORN OLD WEEDS
You gain resistance to either cold or fire damage, as well as proficiency in the Survival skill.
