Homebrew Corquine Species Details
The skies are clear and calm. The night is quiet and peaceful. The silence is soon broken by the sounds of laughter and music traveling through the air coming ever closer to the village. The scents of ripe meats and sweet cakes travel through all the noses around town. Kids were getting excited, the parents finally smiling. They were here. The Nocturnal Fires of the night, the Corquine had arrived.
Appearance
From a distance, Corquines resemble humanoid horses, with large beautiful eyes and long flowing manes. At closer glance, Corquines have the lower body of a canine, or wolf. Their powerful legs made for running, while their rugged upper bodies are well suited for heavy lifting. Despite their strength, they are also quite beautiful. Their fur can be long, medium or short, and can come in a wide variety of fur patterns. Their colors range from browns, grays, whites, to blacks. Though rare, some Corquine are born with orange in their patterns. Their tails are long and furry, sometimes having longer fur than the rest of their body. Because of their coat, they are well adapted to cold climates. Corquines have claws upon their paws. While these claws can aid in climbing, they are not flexible enough to use as weapons.
Something Soft
Corquine have an affinity for anything soft. It could be a blanket, a rabbit, a cat, or even each other. A Corquine will usually keep something soft on their person that holds special significance to them. Easily stressed, Corquine will often have a small collection of soft things they will interact with to calm themselves down.
Packs & Community
Nomadic by nature, Corquine homes are simple structures, easily assembled and portable. Mostly made of skins and bones of the animals hunted for food, Corquine believe no part of the animal should go to waste. Corquine packs will settle down in an area for a couple weeks before moving on.
Packs usually range from 15-100 individuals, but large numbers do not stop them from being a very close knit community. Everyone cares for and loves each other, and it is everyone's job to protect and serve the pack. Should a Corquine do nothing for the pack, they will be reprimanded, but if they still persist, they will be made useful in other ways. Or, rather, their remains will be made useful to the pack.
Nocturnal Fires
Though Corquine are mostly active at night, that doesn't mean they sleep all day. Not wanting to miss a moment of what life has to offer, they tend to only sleep when absolutely necessary. If they're not tending to their homes, gardens or pets, they're usually out exploring for new land, or partying. Corquine love to party, known as Nocturnal Fires, usually partying 3-5 days out of the week. These Nocturnal Fires usually include lots of food, sweet wines, and plenty of desserts. Corquine love sweet foods. The parties typically have fun games such as tag, food fights, dancing and lots of singing. Though sometimes competitions can get a little heated and heavy.
Extremely sociable creatures, Corquine love meeting new people. To them, the more people participating at their Nocturnal Fires, the better. Generally, villages look forward to these Nocturnal Fires when the pack’s travels bring them near a village.
Natures Affinity
Corquine have a strong affinity with nature. Hunting is for food and survival only, though treating hunting as a game usually won't go unpunished. All Corquine are unique individuals. Some will design their home after beautiful plants, some will design their homes after beautiful animal beasts, and others will have unique designs all their own. Corquine have a deep respect for the natural world and will most likely do anything to protect their homeland.
Occupations
Corquine are known for being great traders and hunters, though you’ll often see a few working at a market or butcher shop. Though it is rare to find one owning a business outside of a pack, as their interests and focus tend to be as nomadic as the pack. The pack is self-sufficient and has no real need for coins. Although, some do collect coins for reasons other than their value as currency.
Punishable by Death
Corquine are not afraid to take action for any wrongdoing within their community. Punishments vary depending on the severity of the crime. Continuing to ignore or not contributing to the wellbeing of the pack after receiving a warning usually results in death, and their remains being made useful to the pack.
Harming or killing another member of the pack results in exile from the pack. A fate to some worse than death. Exiles have their fur shaved completely off with a prominent patch of skin on their forehead treated with acid so the fur never grows back. A mark of their exile. Exiles are forbidden from taking part in Nocturnal Fires. Any exile found doing so, their life is forfeit and their remains are left to rot, seen as unfit for use by the pack.
Religion
Corquine customarily devote themselves to two gods. One is a god of love, fertility and joy. The other is a goddess of the hunt. The god of fertility, love, and joy is worshiped through their Nocturnal Fires and acts of procreation. Through their worship, they believe this god blesses them with vibrant youth and energy. The goddess of the hunt provides their hunting skills and food due to the sacrifices she receives when a member of the pack dies. In honor of their death, any useful parts of the body are harvested and the remains are burned in a ceremonial pyre to the goddess.
To not receive this funeral rite is considered dishonorable, and the deceased Corquine will not join his or her packmates in the great sky party. The Great Sky party is a place and event for all dead Corquine who have received the funeral rite. An endless party of excess without the worries or cares of mortal life. Those who do not receive the funeral rite are believed forced to watch the Great Sky Party but never allowed to participate, being fed sour foods for eternity.
