Homebrew Yoshi Species Details

Yoshis or Yoshisaurs, are a sapient species of omnivorous dinosaur humanoids that are native to the Mushroom Kingdom Plane. Their appearance in other realms is completely unheard of. Only in places where the rifts between worlds are so thin such as Helheim could such a strange creature even begin to appear. In the realm of Helheim they are almost universally mistaken for some form of a more reptillian dragonborn. But in actual fact, a yoshi is nothing like a dragonborn.

They have long tongues to reach out and capture their prey and have the ability to quickly form colorful, hollow egg-like calcified orbs that are remarkably balanced for throwing. They lack any sort of breath weapon.

They have an aerial fluttering that allows them to jump farther than other creatures can. In any other plane but their home Mushroom Kingdom Plane and the twisted and distorted realm that is Helheim, these creatures and their odd behaviors and capabilities would be so impractical, that it would be logical to assume that the fabric of those universes would force changes on how they exist and function. One scholar of L'universite Occuli has even considered that if one were transported to a Material Plane aside from the Mushroom Kingdom Plane, they might simply transform into a dragonborn, alternatively, would not be transported there at all, instead being transported to the Mushroom Kingdom Plane upon any attempt.

Yoshi Traits

Yoshisauran Build:

Languages

A yoshi is proficient in speaking both Common and Yoshi.

Keen Senses

Due to their nature as tongue-hunters and the tongue-eye coordination required for such hunting prowess, a yoshi is naturally more perceptive to its environment.
A yoshi gains proficiency with Perception.

Yoshisaurian Legs

Due to their history as a mount by humans in the mushroom kingdom from the times before some of them developed a humanoid form, a yoshi has a build naturally designed for speed. A yoshi has a walking speed of 40 feet. The yoshi also gains proficiency in acrobatics.

Yoshisaurian Eggs

Yoshi do not eliminate waste products in the same way that other creatures do. Instead any part of a food that would become waste is quickly filtered out and calcified into an egg-like shell. This shell is remarkably suited for throwing. As a bonus action, a yoshi can lay an egg. This egg acts as a simple thrown weapon with finesse that, when thrown as an attack action, deals 1d6 bludgeoning damage on hit. It has a short range of 20 feet and a long range of 60 feet. They may create a number of eggs equal to 3+ their constitution modifier per meal. At which point they must spend at least one full round eating in order to produce more eggs. If a yoshi eats food created by a monster CR3 or higher equivalent to the entire mass of that monster, they are able to produce one giant egg. This egg deals 3d6 bludgeoning damage, but is still surprisingly just as easy to throw as the other eggs.
An egg, once created, will remain in tact for 1 hour before crumbling into calcified dust.

Yoshisaurian Tongue

A yoshi's tongue is a powerful and long thing. Locking up tension it shoots out up to 15 feet away. Then, it finds its prey and pulls them back to its mouth.
That is how it was in the old days, before the yoshis became more humanoid.
Now their tongue is used for utility of motion, allowing them to grab items to them from up to 15 feet away.
Though some still may use the tongue in combat.
Given the advent of arms and armor it takes special training for a tongue to do much damage to a combatant, the same as it would take someone to train their fists or legs to deal more damage to a combatant rather than using a weapon.
Still. A Yoshi may choose to use their tongue in place of any other form of unarmed strike they have once per round. The tongue must then recoil back to the mouth before another attack can be made on the next round. This attack deals as much damage as any unarmed strike that particular yoshi is capable of dealing without gauntlets.
This number of attacks with the Yoshi's tongue can not be increased by Extra Attack class features due to the limitations of the yoshi's inherent biology.
After using a yoshi tongue attack, the yoshi cannot cast spells that require a verbal component until the start of their next turn.

Yoshisaurian Flutter

Your long jump is up to 25 feet and your high jump is up to 15 feet, with or without a running start. This is not because of the yoshi's ability to jump is greater  than other creatures, but instead because they will flutter their arms and legs wildly in the air. Something mysterious about the yoshi's biology allows this to give them a temporary flight-like ability that translates to them being able to propel their jump higher or farther while already being in the air.

API

A yoshi chooses their own destiny. Gone are the days of merely being a mount for humans. A yoshis are going through a bout of self-discovery and identity seeking.
You gain +2 in one attribute of your choice and +1 in another.
