Homebrew Bheguar Species Details
"That anchor," uttered Bewen, slowing growing more impatient, "it belongs to me." The man looked at him, attempting to deduce how he would fair in a fight with a bheguar. "I found it.", the man stated with confidence, "Seems to me I'm it's rightful owner now." Bewen smirked, thinking of all the challenges he's faced and monsters he's slayed, and how they compared to this man. Needless to say, Bewen had no reservations of taking Seasplitter by force, and had no doubts that he could rip it from the hands of this person, whether they be alive or dead. Bewen slowly approached the man, pushing towards the stone that was still stained with his blood. "I'm taking that anchor. What you do right now will tell me how many of you I'm gonna kill to get it."
- The Tales of Maximillion, Volume 3: The Underdark
The life of a bheguar can be described by three simple words. Order, honor, and respect. The order of a bheguar society, unbreaking and cruel, determining their path from the day they are born. Honor, preserving one's self in the eyes of their community, their clan, and their race. Respect, living up to the standards set by one's ancestors, and carrying on their legacy through every action.
A Diverse People
Bheguar are descendent of the sharks and whales that have roamed the oceans for thousands of years. The range of species that can be seen in these creatures is equally present in a bheguar community. This variety is a highly admired trait of the bheguar, or at least they believe so.
Bheguar species can determine their path to a large extent. Some lineages are more valued than others, while others simply provide different biological advantages or disadvantages. Individuals take great pride in these unique traits, using them to create reputations and special skills.
Creatures of Order
The most glaring characteristic of the bheguar is their unflinching class system. They have maintained this system since achieving their independence, and have ingrained it into almost every aspect of their culture. While it has been criticized for stifling the independence of individuals, there is rarely any indication of dissent among of kingdom's population
This caste system has been deemed the Broon, named after the first king of the bheguar and its creator. One's placement in the Broon is determined by three factors, lineage, accomplishments, and loyalty. Bheguar are required to wear a seal representing their class at all times and can be denied entry into some places if they rank too low. The various classes of the Broon are as follows:
Thrugesh. This is the lowest possible class of the Broon, composed of traitors, heretics, and radical dissenters. Those who are unlucky enough to be labeled Thrugesh become outcasts in their communities and have almost no opportunity to redeem themselves.
Ruujha. The Ruujha are those who have not done anything considered substantial or beneficial in their lives. This is the base class for most bheguar and is commonly grown out of after reaching maturity.
Brojnin. The class of achievement, the Brojnin is comprised of those of notable occupation, such as scientists, artisans, or soldiers. This is the most common class, as bheguar society expects a job that benefits the group.
Breho. The Breho are the leaders and icons of the public. Generals, distinguished scholars, and anyone who has gained considerable influence make up this class, and are known for advancing their fields or achieving something of high honor.
Thrugon. To be a Thrugon is to be of the highest creed of the bheguar. The Thrugon are those born into legendary families and are the rulers of their respective kingdoms. The leaders of high-ranking clans meet in the Council of Thrugon, a congress that has the final say on all kingdom matters.
Enemies of the Land
The bheguar have had a deep history of conflict with the overworld. From decades of being enslaved by humans and dwarves, to countless wars and battles with what they call the "Armies of the Sun". Centuries ago, King Grownosh Seasplitter severed all ties with the surface world and forbade any contact with them, and ever since, the bheguar have attacked any surface creature who has had the displeasure of coming into contact with them.
In modern times, the bheguar have fallen into obscurity and are considered a myth by surface creatures. Anybody who tells the tale of their interaction with these shark and whale folk is labeled deranged and told they are simply seeing things. Myths about the bheguar include how they would sink any ship that dared sail too far into the Sea of Swords, and how they sacrificed surface-dwellers for the mercy of Umberlee.
Self Appointed Leaders
Ever since the first bheguar was born, they have thought of themselves as superior in every way. Therefore, they have taken it upon themselves to treat all other seafaring people as subjects to be ruled rather than equals. For centuries, they held an iron grip over the sea and used their expanding power to build immense kingdoms. It was only recently that the creatures that were considered lower beings rose up and achieved their independence. Now, the bheguar isolate themselves and criticize from afar, hoping one day to reclaim their throne.
