Homebrew Aetherian Species Details

A creature that has been given life through the Aether, part of the collective consciousness. Aetherians are often caught up in the course of destiny and find themselves involved in the ebb and flow of the universe.

Many years of starlight sailing away, past the great clouds of Astral sea that permeate the expanse of space, there exists the small and shining planet of Betas. This planet exists on its distant realm, full of other similar planets that emulate the planes of existence in their geography and communities. Betas is full of its two shining suns and sparkling constellations. It is full of mystery and wonder, as well as death and danger. The highs are high, and the lows are low, but life on this planet serves well for the calling of adventurers. Its lesser pantheon of gods is defined by its 7 gods of light and gods of darkness. As danger mounts, and as men and women search for the magic that falls like stars, a new race of people is born.

When stars first began to burst into rivers, most were content to call it starlight. However, as more experiments and tests were done people began to recognize the pink and white glittering as not a force of nature, but of your soul. While it might shift gravity and push bodies, it truly affects the souls of the creatures within the bodies. After the first created being was imbued with this "starlight," it was exposed to the truth. This created construct was named Abigale and became the first to speak out into the world about what this magic truly was. She called it Aether, and began a hunt into the deepest ends of the earth to find more people like her. She began to refer to herself and the others she found as Atherians. Studying herself and her companions she discovered certain consistent abilities and feats.

"I will never forget the first time I met another Aetherian. I was wandering the streets of Char'gari, a city to the northern continent of Winter's Rock. Following a rumor, I investigated a young thief with eyes that shone like starlight in the night. Tracing through the city I searched for days before I found the child through their work. Leaving a purse loosely by my side I followed the expert thief who took it from what they imagined was a helpless creature. I followed invisibly, and when I revealed myself in the alley where he was hiding I saw something I've only seen in mirrors. The fear in his tiny eyes shone with pink and white stars. I will never forget that face, the face of a stranger now become family.

Aetherian Traits

Aetherians come in all shapes and sizes, but their connected souls retain these similar properties.

Collector of Aether

If a creature dies within 30 feet of an Aetherian they can choose to keep the soul of that creature housed within themselves. They can have a max of 5 souls within them. A soul within an Aetherian can exist for three more days and extends the life of all spells the raise dead by three days. However, to raise a creature in this way requires their lifeless body to be fully healed through magic. At the end of each day during a long rest, an Aetherian must make a wisdom saving throw: day 1, DC 9. Day 2 DC 10. Day 3, DC 11. If they failed a wisdom saving throw they lose one soul within them. The souls are lost randomly, designated by your DM. For every soul you house beyond your own the DC increases by 1. You cannot lose your own soul in this way. While housing another soul you have a permanent level of exhaustion, this cannot be removed except through a wish spell. Every day that you do not sleep you gain 2 levels of exhaustion instead of 1.

Not My Time

Aetherians are part of a collective soul and are in touch with this idea. When  close to death they feel the pull towards the Aether and know how to remind it that it is not yet their time. You have advantage on Death Saving throws.

Dip into the stream

Feeling your soul being tugged and pulled by the streams of consciousness comes with its perks sometimes. Once per 7 days you can tap into the stream of consciousness that flows through every living thing. You can ask the universe three yes or no questions, answered by the DM. The DM has final say over how the questions are interpreted and answered but they are meant to be impartial and truthful.

Ability Score Increase

Your Wisdom score increases by 2, and your charisma score by 1

Age

Aetherians live generally as long as their body would. Their collective soul makes no mark on the body it is hosted by. However many Aetherians have found that a transference of souls is easy for them, and have lived many lives in many forms.

Alignment

Aetherians are set apart in thought as they can tap into all of nature and life. Most have neutral alignments but some who interfere in the plots of destiny fall into lawful good or lawful evil. Aetherians are generally not creatures of chaos, but exceptions always occur.

Size

Aetherians come in all bodies and sizes, there is no common soul or body for an Aetherian. If your blood line race is a small creature then ignore the speed of that race, no stats or abilities will be gained from that race. Your size can be small or medium, but your speed is always 30.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Languages

you can read, speak, and write in whatever your native language would be from your blood race. You also know common as it is the universal language. You also can understand any language with a successful wisdom check of 13. If you pass you understand the very basic intent behind each sentence, not necessarily the structure, or language. This check must be made per sentence.
